Patricia Generazio’s homebred Discreet Marq took a short but talented field from flag fall to finish May 27 at Belmont Park, winning the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIT) for 3-year-old fillies by three-quarters of a length over Wave Theory. The win by Discreet Marq was the first since taking the Lie Low Stakes going a mile on the turf at Aqueduct last November. “She came to me at Payson Park 21/2 months ago and she’s trained well from Day One,” said winning trainer Christophe Clement. “It’s a bit ambitious to be here, but she was the only speed of the race, and Patricia was really happy to take the shot. It worked out. She’s a nice horse; she was a nice horse last year. She’s a top-class filly, I’m sure of it.” The late Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens was noted as saying “the buildings get mighty tall on the other side of the Hudson (River).” Discreet Marq has found that not to be an obstacle as her family has deep, stakes-winning roots across the Hudson in New Jersey. Discreet Marq is a product of Frank and Patricia Generazio, who are no strangers to racing in the Northeast. From Massachusetts and now living in Florida, they have bred and raced and trained multiple stakes winners up and down the East Coast—none bigger than Presious Passion, an 11-time stakes winner and two-time winner of the United Nations Stakes (gr. IT). The son of Royal Anthem—Princesa’s Passion, by Marquetry, earned more than $2.6 million. As breeders, the Generazios have hit with graded winners Concorde’s Gold, Don Six, and Unreal Turn. The Sands Point winner is out of the stakes-winning Marquetry mare, To Marquet, who is out of the Frank Generazio Jr.-bred and trained Pretty Momma. Pretty Momma won four stakes, all in New Jersey. Pretty Momma is a half sister to New York graded winner Unreal Turn (by Unreal Zeal) and six-time New Jersey stakes winner and turf sprint specialist Shananie’s Boss. To Marquet delivered a full brother to Discreet Marq Feb. 22. Discreet Cat is the sire of nine stakes winners and has four other 2013 added-money winners including Discreet Dancer (gr. II) and Sage Valley (gr. III). The son of Forestry stands at Darley near Lexington for a 2013 fee of $12,500.—E.H. |

Tapicat made her stakes debut a memorable one. The 3-year-old daughter of Tapit set the pace in the Florida Oaks (gr. IIIT) at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 2 on her way to a 23/4-length score. The victory was her third in four starts and came as the 4-5 favorite. “We really love her,” said Benjamin Leon Jr., who races Tapicat in the name of Besilu Stables. “We look for excellent pedigree, conformation, and racing ability, and she has all three. We expected her to do well. She is an unbelievable filly.” Leon, who raced two-time Eclipse Award-winning filly Royal Delta, bought Tapicat for $725,000 out of Book One of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. The filly was consigned by Antony Beck’s Gainesway as agent for itself and Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. Bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Gainesway Thoroughbreds, Tapicat was produced from the winning Storm Cat mare Zealous Cat. “We both owned the mare,” said David Fiske, who manages Ron Winchell’s Lexington farm, Corinthia. “Plus, both Gainesway and Winchell Thoroughbreds have a big interest in Tapit.” Winchell Thoroughbreds raced Tapit, who was a two-time graded stakes winner. The son of Pulpit won the Laurel Futurity (gr. III) at 2 and the following year took the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). Following his racing career, Tapit entered stud at Gainesway Farm near Lexington. Zealous Cat is no longer owned by the two outfits. She was consigned by Gainesway to the 2012 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, where she was bought in foal to Tapit for $350,000 by Glen Hill Farm. Zealous Cat foaled a colt from that mating last Feb. 15. Tapit has sired 40 stakes winners including 2013 added-money winners Flashback, Honorable Dillon, and Joyful Victory. The first two-named were graded stakes winners the day of the Florida Oaks. Flashback won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita, and Honorable Dillon took the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park. Tapit’s 2013 fee at Gainesway is $125,000.—D.S. |
