Winning Colors S. Recap

After settling for runner-up finishes in the two previous editions of the Winning Colors Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs, Beat the Blues registered a front-running victory in this year’s edition of the six-furlong race for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs to secure the first graded stakes win of her career.

The victory by Martin Racing Stable and Morgan Thoroughbred’s Beat the Blues gives the 6-year-old daughter of Irish-bred stallion Great Pyramid at least one stakes win in three straight seasons. In five seasons of racing, Beat the Blues has earned three stakes wins and seven additional stakes-placings, with four of those placings coming in graded stakes.

“She’s been a bridesmaid in so many big races and she was deserving of this,” said winning trainer Bret Calhoun. “She’s run a lot of good races against some good horses and has just been unfortunate to not get there in a graded stakes. Today was her day.”

Having been claimed in two of her first three career starts, first for $20,000 and then for $25,000, Beat the Blues has gone on to earn $520,634 in five seasons of racing. Besides her previous runner-up finishes in the Winning Colors, Beat the Blues also finished second to Tar Heel Mom in the 2011 Honorable Miss Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga and placed third in last year’s edition of that race won by C C’s Pal. Her other stakes wins have come at Oaklawn Park and Prairie Meadows.

Bred in Florida by Edward and B.K. Pendray, William Murphy, and Annabel Murphy, Beat the Blues is the first stakes winner out of the winning Pentelicus mare Imtheblues, who has produced two starters, both winners.

The Pendrays also bred Imtheblues, the first foal out of Thunder Blues.

Beat the Blues is the first stakes winner from four small crops of racing age for Great Pyramid, by Danehill—Offshore Boom, by Be My Guest. A full brother to 2002 English and Irish classic winner and European Horse of the Year Rock of Gibraltar, Great Pyramid registered his lone victory in Ireland before standing for $2,500 at Arthur Appleton’s Bridlewood Farm near Ocala. Fourteen-year-old Rock of Gibraltar stood this season for €17,500.—F.A.
