Bayakoa S. Recap
Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer can pick out a horse from any corner of the country and turn it into a graded stakes winner. Witness Bayakoa Stakes (gr. II) winner Broken Sword, whom Hollendorfer found at a sale at the Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation Center in Washington. The now-3-year-old had been purchased by trainer Eoin Harty for $20,000 out of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale from the consignment of Bedouin Bloodstock, agent.
“She was broken and taught how to gallop and breeze up there,” noted Hollendorfer. “They hold a sale every year, and we really liked how she went.”
Broken Sword went just fine in the Bayakoa, taking advantage of a slow start by favorite Fiftyshadesofhay to steal away to the front early, then maintaining her daylight advantage to win by an easy 41/4 lengths. In 2012 she earned a victory in the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes in her first career start. She won the stakes at Pleasanton by a whopping 11 lengths. This year she had a trio of third-place finishes to show for five starts before winning an allowance/optional claimer at Golden Gate Fields in her start before the Bayakoa. Hollendorfer said he will look for a race at Santa Anita next for Broken Sword.
Broken Sword, bred by SF Bloodstock, is out of champion Katana, a stakes winner and 3-year-old champion filly in her native New Zealand. She won the 2003 Bank of New Zealand Breeders’ Stakes and finished second in that same year’s Ford Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (NZ-I). With both Princequillo and Nasrullah appearing in her pedigree, Katana was sent to the U.S. in 2003 and eventually sold in 2009 at the Keeneland November mixed sale while carrying the Bayakoa winner. She was purchased for $45,000 by Bowden Global Bloodstock from the consignment of Mill Ridge Sales, agent.
Broken Vow is the sire of Broken Sword and 56 other added-money winners, including 2013 graded/group victors Cyber Secret (gr. II), Commander (Can-III), and Forever Fixed (Pan-I). Broken Vow stands at Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud near Versailles, Ky., where his 2014 stud fee will be $25,000.—L.S
