West Point Thoroughbreds’ purchase of Twilight Eclipse from former owner John L. Langemeier keeps looking better and better. Twilight Eclipse, a son of Purim, won his second stakes following the purchase when he captured the Pan American Stakes (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park in world record time for 11/2 miles on grass. His time, 2:22.63, sliced .09 of a second off the time registered by Bright Thought in the San Luis Rey Stakes (gr. IIT) March 16 at Santa Anita. The prior mark, 2:224/5 by Hawkster at Santa Anita, had stood since October 1989. Twilight Eclipse’s first stakes win for West Point came in the W.L. McKnight Handicap (gr. IIT) at Calder Casino & Race Course in November. In between the two races, Twilight Eclipse ran fourth in the Mac Diarmida Stakes (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream in February. Twilight Eclipse’s success rate—four wins from eight starts—seems remarkable considering the gelding sold for only $1,000 as a short yearling to Langemeier at the 2010 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Twilight Eclipse, who won both of his races for Langemeier, has earned $244,611, most of it for West Point. Bred in Kentucky by Epona Thoroughbreds, Twilight Eclipse is the first stakes winner out of the Twilight Agenda mare My Twilight Dancer, whose dam, Shimmy, is a stakes-winning daughter by Nijinsky II. Winner of the Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park and third in the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IIT), Shimmy traces back three generations to blue hen Alablue. Alone and in partnership, West Point’s stakes winners over the years include grade I winners Awesome Gem, Dream Rush, Flashy Bull, Irish Smoke, Lear’s Princess, and Macho Again. The outfit’s stakes winners in 2013 include Awesome Vision, whose three wins this year includes a score in the Compelling Word Stakes at Aqueduct two days before the Pan American. Deceased Purim has sired three stakes winners including additional 2013 added-money winner Purim’s Dancer. The son of Dynaformer stood at Nathan Fox’s Richland Hills near Midway, Ky., prior to his death in January 2012 from complications from colic surgery.—D.S. |
