Golden Mystery picked an opportune time to win the most important race of her career. Her victory in the Hurricane Bertie Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park Feb. 10 for Farnsworth Stables came the day before she was to be offered at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale. Golden Mystery almost didn’t run in the $150,000 Hurricane Bertie because of the presence of grade II winner Dust and Diamonds. She received the go ahead after Dust and Diamonds was retired before the race. “We weren’t sure we were going to run,” said Golden Mystery’s trainer, Martin Wolfson. “I sent her home (to Farnsworth Farm in Florida) for four or five days. When I found out Dust and Diamonds got hurt, I told the owners I wanted to bring her back for this race. That was the filly to beat.” Golden Mystery went off as the 5-2 favorite in the 61/2-furlong Hurricane Bertie. She raced close to the pace in the early going before taking the lead in the stretch and winning by 31/2 lengths. “I felt like I would win this race because I know this mare,” said jockey Luis Saez. “This is her favorite weather, too, because she has a problem sweating. Martin Wolfson told me when she is coming down the stretch to let her run. He wanted her in second or third position and that would be perfect for her.” The victory was Golden Mystery’s second straight. The daughter of Awesome Again had opened the year with a triumph in the restricted Florida Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes at Calder Race Course Jan. 19. Farnsworth is owned by the father and son team of Robert and Myron Miller. At one time the Millers concentrated on the breeding part of the business but now focus on the commercial end. They have raced grade I winners Ask the Moon, Gozzip Girl, and Jessica Is Back, plus several other graded winners. Bred in Florida by Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs, Golden Mystery is the second stakes winner out of the winning Saint Ballado mare Mysterious Angel, whose other stakes winner is Beloveda, by Awesome Again’s champion son Ghostzapper. Awesome Again, like Ghostzapper, stands at Adena Springs Kentucky near Paris. Awesome Again has sired 50 stakes winners including additional 2013 added-money winners Game On Dude (gr. II) and Oxbow (gr. III). Awesome Again’s 2013 fee is $75,000.—D.S. |
