SidneyÕs Candy, who wasnÕt on Steve HaskinÕs Derby Dozen the week of April 3, moved up to one of the top spots on this weekÕs list (page 1207) by virtue of his commanding performance in the April 3 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) at 11Ú8 miles. The son of Candy Ride opened up a four-length lead in the stretch and scored by 41Ú2 lengths over Setsuko. Lookin At Lucky, the odds-on favorite and last yearÕs champion 2-year-old male, experienced some tough going around the far turn but managed to finish third, six lengths behind the winner.
The Santa Anita Derby score was SidneyÕs CandyÕs third triumph in as many starts this year. The colt started with a victory in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) in February and then won the March 13 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II).
If SidneyÕs Candy does run in the Run for the Roses, he will have his work cut out for him. The last Santa Anita Derby winner to capture the Kentucky Derby was Sunday Silence in 1989. The other Santa Anita Derby winners to win the Kentucky Derby are Hill Gail (in 1952), Determine (1954), California-bred Swaps (1955), Lucky Debonair (1965), Majestic Prince (1969), Affirmed (1978), and the filly Winning Colors (1988).
SidneyÕs Candy, bred by Jenny Craig and her late husband, Sidney, races for the Sid and Jenny Craig Trust. Founders of the Jenny Craig weight loss centers, the Craigs campaigned SidneyÕs CandyÕs sire, Candy Ride, who was a grade I winner for them.
Candy Ride was a champion miler in his native Argentina prior to being acquired by the Craigs. Following his importation to the United States, he won all three starts, including the 2003 Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) in track-record time (1:59.11) at the 11Ú4-mile Kentucky Derby distance.
SidneyÕs CandyÕs dam, Fair Exchange, is boarded at William S. FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky. The mare has been bred this year to Candy Ride.
Candy Ride has sired 10 stakes winners, including Misremembered, who won the March 6 Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I). Candy Ride stands for $25,000 at LaneÕs End.ÑD.S.
