The good fortunes of 2009 champion juvenile male Lookin At Lucky continued in a big way when he was sent to Oaklawn Park to race for the first time outside of California.

A three-time grade I winner last year, Lookin At Lucky captured the March 13 Rebel Stakes (gr. II) by a hard-fought head over NobleÕs Promise.

The son of Smart Strike is trained by Bob Baffert for the partnership of Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman, who also campaigned two-time BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Midnight Lute.

While Watson and Weitman are residents of Tucson, Ariz., and own car dealerships, Pegram has homes in both Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Del Mar, Calif., and owns a string of McDonaldÕs restaurant franchises in Arizona.

Lookin At Lucky is the second consecutive graded stakes winner produced by Private Feeling (by Belong to Me), whose price tag understandably skyrocketed last year after being bought by Jerry Bailey and Lance RobinsonÕs Gulf Coast Farms for $130,000 in 2004.

The 11-year-old mare, whose 4-year-old colt Kensei (by Mr. Greeley) was a two-time grade II winner last year, fetched $2 million at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she was bought by Charlotte WeberÕs Live Oak Stud while carrying a full brother to Kensei. That foal, a colt, was born Feb. 22.

Lookin At Lucky, who was a $35,000 RNA as a yearling, was purchased for $475,000 by Pegram at the 2009 Keeneland April 2-year-old sale from Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent.

Bailey, who co-bred Lookin At Lucky in Kentucky with Robinson in the name of their Ocala, Fla.-based Gulf Coast Farms, said while Lookin At Lucky had some minor flaws as a foal and didnÕt stand out physically, he quickly began proving his abilities upon being broken.

Private Feeling is a half sister to grade II winner Ring My Bell and the grade III-winning Lord Avie mare Grand Charmer, who produced Flirtatious (by A.P. Indy), the dam of champion 3-year-old filly Wait a While.

Smart Strike is the sire of 71 stakes winners, including other 2010 added-money winners Papa Clem (gr. II) and Striking Dancer (gr. II). Smart Strike stands for $75,000 at Will FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky.ÑE.M
