3rd at 3LOUISIANA DERBY
(gr. II , 9f , to Mission Impazible, A Little Warm, defeating Discreetly Mine, Stay Put, Ron the Greek, The Program, Mister Marti Gras, Fly Down, Wow Wow Wow, Hotep, Island Soul, Backtrack ).
Just when it seemed nearly impossible for Mission Impazible to find the winnerÕs circle again after three missed attempts, he finally succeeded and notched his first stakes victory in the process in the March 27 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the son of UnbridledÕs Song is now officially back on the Triple Crown trail.
Mission Impazible, who was bred in Kentucky by Jane and Frank Lyon Jr.Õs Summer Wind Farm near Georgetown, Ky., was bought for $200,000 by Twin Creeks Racing Stables during the second session of the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
Twin Creeks, a racing partnership group based near Versailles, Ky., and managed by Randy Gullatt, has campaigned Mission Impazible in all his starts.
ÒWe knew his mother (La Paz) very well, she produced some very nice horses that we raised, and we actually sold the mare to Summer Wind,Ó said Gullatt of La Paz, a stakes-winning daughter of the stakes-winning Crafty Drone mare Classy Craft, who fetched $1.6 million at the 2000 Keeneland November mixed sale. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, she was in foal to Storm Cat.
ÒWhen we saw (Mission Impazible) in the sale, we thought he was one of (La PazÕ) strongest individuals. The mare was one of my all-time favorites, and I thought the world of her,Ó added Gullatt, who started out in the industry as a trainer in 1987.
Gullatt said he and partner Steve Davison had originally seen La Paz race as a 2-year-old in 1990 for breeder Triple AAA Ranch and decided to purchase her privately.
Eight of La PazÕ offspring have sold for six figures at auction, including graded stakes winners Spanish Empire (by Pleasant Colony) and Forest Camp (by Deputy Minister), who is now standing in South Korea.
La PazÕ last reported foal is a yearling Pleasantly Perfect colt named Pazitively Perfect.
UnbridledÕs Song is the sire of 85 stakes winners. Among his five black-type winners of 2010 are Warbling (gr. II), Unrivaled Belle (gr. III), and Winslow Homer (gr. III). UnbridledÕs Song stands for $115,000 at the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky.ÑE.M
