After Padua StableÕs Odysseus won a 11Ú16-mile allowance optional claimer at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 17 by an impressive 15 lengths, there was much anticipation as to whether the 3-year-old son of Malibu Moon would continue to deliver along the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) trail.

ItÕs safe to say that Odysseus more than lived up to the expectations of connections and fans alike, however, when he held on by a nose to capture the March 13 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) over an impressive cast of six other Triple Crown hopefuls.

Tom Albertrani trains Odysseus for Padua, which is based in Ocala, Fla., and owned by Satish and Anne Sanan. The Sanans, who bought their first Pauda horses in 1997, have campaigned several grade I winners over the years, including two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, whom they owned in partnership.

Odysseus, who now has earnings of $219,920, was bred in Kentucky by Haymarket Farm and Lakemont Stable. A $110,000 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga August yearling sale purchase in 2008, he was bought by Padua the next year for $250,000 at the Ocala BreedersÕ Sales Co.Õs March 2-year-old sale from Nick de Meric, agent.

Odysseus hails from the family of the winning Conquistador Cielo mare Persimmon Hill, who also produced multiple stakes victor Once Around (by You and I) and stakes-placed runner Persimmon Honey (by Colonial Affair). Persimmon HillÕs most recent offspring is a yearling filly named Ctimene (by Consolidator).

Rose OÕRiley (by Nijinsky II), the second dam of Odysseus, is a full sister to 1981 champion grass female and grade I producer De La Rose, plus grade I winner Upper Nile.

Odysseus is also from the family of dual group I winner Spartacus (by Danehill) and Hong Kong Derby (HK-I) winner Johan Cruyff (by Danehill).

Malibu Moon is the sire of 43 stakes winners, including other 2010 added-money winner Life At Ten. Malibu Moon stands for $40,000 at B. Wayne HughesÕ Spendthrift Farm near Lexington.ÑE.M.
