Stately Victor did more than just become a prime contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) with his longshot victory in the April 10 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland. The 41Ú4-length triumph at 40-1 vaulted the Ghostzapper colt into the sixth position on Steve HaskinÕs Derby Dozen (see page 1271).
If Stately Victor wins the Kentucky Derby for owners F. Thomas Conway and his son, Jack, he will become the first runner to win both the Blue Grass and the Kentucky Derby since Strike the Gold in 1991.
Bubbling Over, one of owner Col. E.R. BradleyÕs four Kentucky Derby winners, was the first to win both races, doing so in 1926. Bubbling Over was followed by Shut Out (in 1942), Tomy Lee (1959), Chateaugay (1963), Northern Dancer (1964), Lucky Debonair (1965), Dust Commander (1970), Riva Ridge (1972), and Spectacular Bid (1979). Forward Pass captured the 1968 Blue Grass and finished first in the Derby but was disqualified in the latter race.
Frank StronachÕs Adena Springs is the breeder of Stately Victor. The elder Conway bought the Kentucky-bred colt for $250,000 at the 2009 Adena Springs March sale of 2-year-olds in training from Adena Springs, agent.
The year before, Stately Victor was bought back for $110,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale. Hidden Brook, agent, consigned the colt for Adena Springs.
Jack Conway is the current Kentucky Attorney General. He is running as a Democrat for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Republican Jim Bunning.
Stately VictorÕs dam, Collect the Cash, a Stronach homebred, had shown a liking for KeenelandÕs turf course as a racemare. She captured the 2000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. IT).
Stately Victor is Collect the CashÕs first stakes winner. The mare produced a Lemon Drop Kid colt Feb. 9.
Ghostzapper, a Stronach homebred who was 2004 Horse of the Year and champion older male, is the sire of additional stakes winner Golden Ghost. Ghostzapper stands for $30,000 at Adena Springs near Paris, Ky.ÑD.S.
