The relatively new Donegal Racing partnership of Iowa attorney Jerry Crawford has gotten off to a fast start. The group, which Crawford put together over the last year, was represented by its second stakes winner in 2010 when Paddy OÕPrado captured the March 6 Palm Beach Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park. The Palm Beach marked the first career win for Paddy OÕPrado, who has had on-the-board finishes in his last three starts, including the With Anticipation Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Saratoga last September. Paddy OÕPrado, a 3-year-old son of El Prado, was bought for $105,000 by trainer Dale Romans at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale from Gainesway, agent. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thoroughbreds, a partnership of Joan Winchell and her son, Ron, who own Corinthia Farm near Lexington and are continuing the racing operation started by the late Verne H. Winchell. Verne Winchell, who bred more than 60 stakes winners during his lifetime, was the founder of WinchellÕs Donuts and later became the chairman of DennyÕs Restaurants. Perhaps Paddy OÕPrado inherited some of his turf abilities from his graded stakes-winning dam Fun House (by Prized), a Winchell homebred who scored her big win in the 2004 Buena Vista Handicap (gr. IIT) and placed in six other black-type events. While Fun House is a half sister to grade II winner Early Flyer (by Gilded Time), even more abundant talent stems from the descendants of her second dam Carols Christmas (by Whitesburg). The dam of grade I-winning millionaire Olympio (by Naskra), Carols Christmas is also the granddam of millionaire Bien Nicole (by Bien Bien), and the great granddam of grade I winner Pyro (by Pulpit), who is standing his first season at Darley Japan. Pyro was bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Olympio was bred in WinchellÕs name. Fun House, who has a yearling Street Sense colt, was bred to Tapit for 2010. El Prado, the sire of 77 stakes winners, died in 2009. He is the sire of additional 2010 added-money winner Cosmic.ÑE.M. |
