Paddy OÕPrado took a major step atop the 3-year-old turf division when he won the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIT) June 19. The son of El Prado scored by three lengths under co-top weight of 121 pounds. His time for the 13Ú16 miles was 1:54.20.
The Colonial Turf Cup marked a return to grass racing for Paddy OÕPrado. After winning the Palm Beach Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park in early March, he made his next three starts on the main track prior to the Colonial Cup Turf. He ran second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), and sixth in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
Paddy OÕPrado races for Donegal Racing, a partnership headed by Iowa lawyer Jerry Crawford. Dale Romans, who trains Paddy OÕPrado, purchased the colt for $105,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale from Gainesway, agent.
Romans also trains stakes winner Vow to Wager for Donegal. Vow to Wager won the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park in February and placed in the Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs June 12.
Crawford bought Paddy OÕPradoÕs 2-year-old half sister, Patti OÕRahy (by Rahy), as a yearling at the 2009 Keeneland September sale shortly after Paddy OÕPrado ran third in the With Anticipation Stakes on grass at Saratoga. Julie Cauthen acted as agent for Crawford in the purchase of Patti OÕRahy, who was consigned by Gainesway, agent. Patti OÕRahy is unraced.
Winchell Thoroughbreds is the breeder of Paddy OÕPrado, who is the second winner out of grade II winner Fun House. By Prized, Fun House is kept at the Winchell familyÕs Corinthia near Lexington. She produced a filly by Tapit this year and is back in foal to him.
Deceased El Prado is represented by 77 stakes winners, including additional 2010 added-money winner Cosmic. El Prado stood at Frank StronachÕs Adena Springs near Paris, Ky. He died of a heart attack last September.ÑD.S.
