Eskendereya did more than just win the Feb. 20 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) by an impressive 81Ú2 lengths at Gulfstream Park for Ahmed ZayatÕs Zayat Stables. The son of GiantÕs Causeway recorded the fastest Beyer Speed Figure for a 3-year-old this year. His 106 Beyer came after he ran the 11Ú8 miles in 1:48.87.
The Fountain of Youth has served as an important step to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Four winners of the race have won the Churchill classic. The first was Tim Tam in 1958, followed by Kauai King in 1966, Spectacular Bid in 1979, and Thunder Gulch in 1995. The first three went on to win the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). Thunder Gulch added the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) to his classic resumŽ.
Although Fasig-Tipton sponsored the Fountain of Youth Stakes, it was a Keeneland sale graduate that won it. Consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent, to the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, Eskendereya was bought by Zayat Stables for $250,000.
Sanford R. Robertson is the breeder of Eskendereya, who was foaled and raised at Woods Edge, owned by Peter OÕCallaghan and located near Lexington. EskendereyaÕs dam, Aldebaran Light, is boarded at Woods Edge. Also the dam of English group I winner Balmont, Aldebaran Light is in foal to Henny Hughes and is booked to GiantÕs Causeway.
GiantÕs Causeway, the leading sire of 2009, has sired 81 stakes winners. His five added-money winners of 2010 also include Neko Bay (gr. II) and Connemara, who won the Feb. 20 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) at Golden Gate Fields. GiantÕs Causeway stands for $100,000 at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.ÑD.S.
