Kinsale King appears to be a hot item racing at six furlongs. The 5-year-old son of Yankee Victor recorded his third consecutive win at that distance when he captured the Jan. 23 Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita. With his Palos VerdesÕ triumph, Kinsale King, who scored by a half-length over Ventana in 1:08.81, ended the four-race win streak of 2009 Eclipse Award sprint finalist Dancing in Silks. The odds-on favorite and the 123-pound topweight, Dancing in Silks finished third in the Palos Verdes, his first start since winning the Sentient Jet BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) in November at Oak Tree at Santa Anita. Kinsale KingÕs win streak started with a score in an optional claiming race in October at the Oak Tree meeting. He next won the Vernon O. Underwood Stakes (gr. III) in December at Hollywood Park. Kinsale King races for Dr. Patrick SheehyÕs Super Horse. He was bought by Sheehy Brothers, agent, at the 2007 Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training from Sam Hendricks, agent. Bred in Kentucky by Marvin Little Jr., Kinsale King first was auctioned at the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, he was purchased for $27,000 by K&C&C Stable. Little, who owns Meadowlark Valley Farm near Paris, Ky., is best known as the breeder of 1991 champion and dual classic winner Hansel. By Woodman, Hansel won the Preakness (gr. I) and Belmont (gr. I) Stakes after running unplaced in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Kinsale King is out of the Woodman mare Flaming Mirage, dam also of stakes-placed Ballado Chieftan. Flaming Mirage produced a Forest Danger colt in May 2009 and was not bred back because of the late foaling date. She is booked to two-time grade I winner and 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) runner-up Pioneerof the Nile. ÒSheÕs a proven mare, and Pioneerof the Nile is a first-crop sire, and thatÕs the kind of mating buyers like,Ó Little said. Yankee Victor has sired nine stakes winners. He stands at the Korean Racing Association Jeju Stud Farm in South Korea.ÑD.S. |
