Although Ventana had not yet won a stakes, the son of Toccet still went off as the favorite in the April 3 Potrero Grande Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park, and to the delight of his connections, he didnÕt disappoint.

Ventana, who was graded stakes-placed twice leading up to the Potrero Grande, boosted his earnings to $256,517 with the victory for trainer Bob Baffert and owners Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman.

Ventana, who brought $147,000 as a yearling, was purchased for $410,000 by Hoods Up Stables at the 2008 Barretts March 2-year-old sale from Wavertree Stables, agent.

The bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Joe Mulholland Sr., his sons Joe and John; and his daughter, Karen.

The Mulhollands run Mulholland Farm near Georgetown, Ky. Some of the best horses bred by the farm include TVG BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Silver Train, and three-time Puerto Rican champion Kentucky Beauty.

The operation acquired VentanaÕs winning dam, Full Figure (by Polish Numbers), for $87,000 at the 2005 Keeneland November mixed sale. Carrying Ventana, she was consigned by Castleton Lyons, agent.

Joe Mulholland said they bought the mare based on the fact that they owned her half sister Jazz Rags (by Dixieland Band), who had produced some high-priced yearlings.

He added that Ventana was an impressive individual from the time he was a young foal.

ÒHe was a big, strapping, rangy colt with good bone and a good walkÉheÕs an impressive looking horse,Ó Mulholland said.

Averell (by Restless Native), the dam of Full Figure, is a half sister to champion 2-year-old and pensioned sire Lord Avie; plus stakes winner Avum (by Umbrella Fella), who is the great-granddam of grade I-winning millionaire Stephen Got Even (by A.P. Indy).

Full Figure, who is also the dam of stakes winner Miss Challenge (by More Than Ready), produced a colt by Corinthian in early April. Plans call for the Mulhollands to consign Full FigureÕs yearling Silver Train filly to the 2010 Keeneland September sale.

Toccet, the sire of six stakes winners, stands for $3,500 at Dana Point Farm in Pennsylvania.ÑE.M.
