Quality Road returned to the scene of his greatest triumph for the Feb. 6 Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park and had no problem breaking his own track record. Winner of last yearÕs $750,000 BlackBerry Presents the 58th Running of the Florida Derby (gr. I) in track-record time of 1:47.72 for 11Ú8 miles at Gulfstream, Quality Road lowered the record to 1:47.49 with his 123Ú4-length score in the Donn. Quality Road, by Elusive Quality, not only lowered the track record, but recorded a 121 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest of the year on any surface and at any distance. A homebred for Edward P. Evans, Quality Road has won four of his five starts at Gulfstream. His first victory came in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), a prep for the Florida Derby. This year Quality Road won the HalÕs Hope Stakes (gr. III) Jan. 3, opening day. Evans bought Quality RoadÕs dam, Kobla (in foal to Mt. Livermore), for $1.05 million at the 1999 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from LaneÕs End, agent for Allen PaulsonÕs Brookside Farms. Kobla, by PaulsonÕs stallion Strawberry Road, and her dam, grade II winner Winglet, were bred by Paulson. KoblaÕs full sister, Ajina, who raced for Paulson, was voted 1997 champion 3-year-old filly. Kobla is kept at EvansÕ Spring Hill Farm near Casanova, Va. She is in foal to Elusive Quality and is booked back to him. EvansÕ broodmare band also includes Quality RoadÕs half-sister, Kobla Road. A 5-year-old daughter of Gone West, Kobla Road is in foal to Langfuhr and is booked to Stormy Atlantic. Quality RoadÕs 2-year-old half-sister Kobla Cat (by Tale of the Cat) is in training with Ron Stevens at Legacy Stable in South Carolina. Evans is represented by additional 2010 homebred stakes winner A Little Warm. A 3-year-old colt by Stormin Fever, A Little Warm won the Jan. 9 Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream. Elusive Quality has sired 55 stakes winners, including additional 2010 added-money winner Flavor. Last year Elusive Quality was represented by 16 stakes winners. Elusive Quality stands at Sheikh MohammedÕs Darley near Lexington. His 2010 fee is $75,000.ÑD.S. |
