Pioneerof the Nile took a big step on the way to the April 4 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) when he won the Feb. 7 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. Making his first start since winning the Dec. 20 CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park, he captured the Robert B. Lewis by a half-length after making up three lengths in the final furlong.
Pioneerof the Nile races as a homebred for Ahmed ZayatÕs Zayat Stables. By Empire Maker out of the stakes-winning Lord At War mare Star of Goshen, he is the first stakes winner bred by the outfit.
Star of Goshen, who was bred in Kentucky by Lavin Bloodstock Services, raced for Gary and Betty BiszantzÕ Cobra Farm. She won the 1997 La Troienne Stakes at 3 at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby week.
Zayat Stables privately purchased Star of Goshen, and one of her daughters, Regala Di Trieste, in a package deal in 2005 from Cobra Farm. The two parties were brought together by Meg LevyÕs Bluewater Sales. Star of Goshen was carrying Pioneerof the Nile at the time, and Regala Di Trieste was in foal to Gulch.
Cobra Farm, located near Lexington, had done business with Ahmed Zayat earlier in 2005. Zayat had bought Pioneerof the NileÕs older half-brother Forefathers for $680,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale. Bluewater Sales acted as agent for Cobra. Forefathers, by Gone West, went on to place in three graded stakes.
Pioneerof the Nile was consigned to the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale by Hill ÔnÕ Dale Sales Agency, agent. He was bought by Zayat Stables for $290,000.
Zayat Stables has been around since 2005 and already has raced 16 graded stakes winners, including one in partnership. In addition to Pioneerof the Nile, the other grade I winners are Downthedustyroad, Point Ashley, and Thorn Song.
Empire Maker, winner of the 2003 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), has sired eight stakes winners, including five that were added-money winners in 2008. Empire Maker stands at Khalid AbdullahÕs Juddmonte Farms near Lexington. His 2009 fee is $75,000.ÑD.S.
