Pioneerof the Nile is flowing in the same direction as was Brother Derek three years ago. Both Southern California-based colts virtually ran the table of local races before heading east to compete in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Brother Derek won the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), then won the San Rafael (gr. II), Santa Catalina (gr. II), and Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) before a fourth-place finish in the Run for the Roses. Pioneerof the Nile won the CashCall Futurity (formerly the Hollywood Futurity), the Robert B. Lewis (formerly the Santa Catalina), and now the San Felipe (gr. II) on his way to a showdown with The Pamplemousse in the Santa Anita Derby April 4.
A son of Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Empire Maker from his second crop, Pioneerof the Nile races as a homebred for Ahmed ZayatÕs Zayat Stables. In fact, he is the first stakes winner for ZayatÕs breeding operation. Zayat, who had a public split from trainer Bob Baffert nearly two years ago, is now back with the three-time Kentucky Derby-winning conditioner, whose experience in the classics should bode well for Pioneerof the Nile in the weeks and months ahead.
Star of Goshen, a daughter of Lord At War who won the seven-furlong La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs, is the dam of Pioneerof the Nile. Although injuries cut short her racing career, Star of Goshen has other Louisville ties. She was bred by the Lavin familyÕs Lavin Bloodstock Services. Dr. Gary Lavin, his wife, Betsy, and their sons Allan and Kevin run Longfield Farm, located about 20 miles from Churchill. Star of Goshen is also the dam of stakes-placed Forefathers, who was bought by Zayat for $680,000 at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale. Zayat also purchased Star of Goshen privately from Gary and Betty BiszantzÕ Cobra Farm when the mare was carrying Pioneerof the Nile in a deal brought together by Meg LevyÕs Bluewater Sales.
Pioneerof the NileÕs second dam, Castle Eight, produced another fine California runner, Powis Castle, winner of the Malibu Stakes (gr. II) and Vernon O. Underwood BreedersÕ Cup Stakes (gr. III).
Empire Maker is the sire of eight stakes winners, including additional 2009 stakes winner Acoma (gr. III). Empire Maker stands at Khalid AbdullahÕs Juddmonte Farms near Lexington. His 2009 fee is $75,000.ÑL.S.
