Despite making his first start since finishing eighth in the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Regal Ransom went off as the 6-5 favorite in the Sept. 19 Super Derby (gr. II) at Louisiana Downs. Breaking on top in the 11Ú8-mile race, Regal Ransom set the pace and won by 11Ú4 lengths in 1:49.63 for Godolphin Racing.
Godolphin, founded by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed, is on a hot streak reaching back to August. The outfit is represented in September by three additional graded or group winners, including Pyro, who won the Forego Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. Its August stakes winners include Saratoga grade I winners Flashing, Music Note, and Seventh Street, and grade IIT winner Justenuffhumor. Sheikh Mohammed, in the name of his Darley outfit, also won the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga with Telling.
Sheikh MohammedÕs advisor, John Ferguson, purchased Regal Ransom for $675,000 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Florida February sale of 2-year-olds in training from Harris Training Center, agent.
Regal Ransom won one of two starts at 2 in North America before being sent to Dubai to be prepared for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. He left Dubai on a promising note after winning the group II UAE Derby Sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group. In the Run for the Roses, Regal Ransom raced close to the pace before weakening in the stretch and finishing eighth.
Regal Ransom was bred in Kentucky by Gerald FordÕs Diamond A Racing. Ford keeps Regal RansomÕs dam, KelliÕs Ransom, at his Diamond A Farms near Versailles, Ky. The farm is situated on property that was part of Allen PaulsonÕs Brookside Farms.
KelliÕs RansomÕs yearling colt by Grand Slam went through the Keeneland September yearling sale during the third session. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, he failed to reach his reserve and was bought back for $145,000.
Distorted Humor has sired 79 stakes winners, 14 of which are added-money winners this year. Distorted Humor stands at Bill Casner and Kenny TrouttÕs WinStar Farm near Versailles. His 2009 fee was $150,000.ÑD.S.
