Zensational was a little slow in the early going of the Aug. 8 Bing Crosby Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar against older horses but that hardly seemed to matter. After falling behind, he quickly charged to the lead and won by 21Ú2 lengths over Talkin to Mom Roo. His time for the six furlongs was a sharp 1:08.57. The coltÕs owner, Ahmed Zayat, who races in the name of Zayat Stables, is enjoying a big year. He is represented by additional graded stakes winners EatonÕs Gift, Heart Ashley, Pioneerof the Nile, Soul Warrior, and Thorn Song. Pioneerof the Nile, a homebred, won three graded stakes in the winter and spring, including the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). He then finished second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) behind Mine That Bird. Zayat later got a measure of revenge when Soul Warrior won the Aug. 1 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) over a field that included Mine That Bird, who finished third. The Bing Crosby was the third consecutive triumph for Zensational. The 3-year-old son of UnbridledÕs Song won the July 5 Triple Bend Handicap (gr. I) at seven furlongs at Hollywood Park in his previous start. Zayat Stables purchased Zensational for $700,000 from CrupiÕs New Castle Farm, agent, at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Florida February sale of 2-year-olds in training. The price was a far cry from the $20,000 Zensational sold for at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale when he was purchased by A1A Racing, agent, from Claiborne Farm, agent. Bred by Claiborne, Zensational was produced from Claiborne homebred stakes winner Joke, whose dam, Tour, was bred by Claiborne in partnership with Patricia Blass. Tour, by former Claiborne stallion Forty Niner, also was a stakes winner in the Claiborne silks. Claiborne, which is owned by the Hancock family, is located near Paris, Ky. Joke did not produce an offspring this year and is in foal to Claiborne stallion Eddington. JokeÕs yearling colt by Eddington is consigned to the Keeneland September yearling sale. Claiborne is represented by additional 2009 stakes winner Blame. A homebred for Claiborne and Adele B. Dilschneider, Blame won the Aug. 2 Curlin Stakes at Saratoga. UnbridledÕs Song has sired 79 stakes winners. His 10 added-money winners of 2009 also includes Thorn Song (gr. IT). UnbridledÕs Song stands at the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky. His 2009 fee was $125,000.ÑD.S. |
