(gr. I , 7f , to Capt. Candyman Can, Vineyard Haven, defeating Despite the Odds, Not for Silver, Big Drama, Flat Bold, Everyday Heroes, Prince Joshua ).
After Capt. Candyman Can won the April 4 Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct, the coltÕs trainer, Ian Wilkes, said ÒOur ultimate goal is the (NetJets) KingÕs Bishop Stakes (gr. I).Ó
WilkesÕ wish came true when Capt. Candyman Can won the seven-furlong stakes Aug. 29 at Saratoga following the disqualification of first-place finisher Vineyard Haven, who had smashed into Capt. Candyman Can in the final sixteenth. The victory was the fourth in six starts for Capt. Candyman Can this year.
Capt. Candyman Can, by second-crop sire Candy Ride, is the sole runner for owners Dr. Joseph Rauch and David Zell. ÒWe canÕt tell you how grateful we are for the fine job Ian Wilkes has done,Ó Rauch said.
Rauch is the director of an urgent treatment center near Leesburg, Fla., north of Orlando. Zell, from South Florida, is retired from the real estate business.
Capt. Candyman Can was bred by Rauch and Zell in partnership with Suzi ShoemakerÕs Lantern Hill Farm. The farm is located near Midway, Ky.
In the Lantern Hill name, Rauch, Zell, and Shoemaker bought the Storm Creek mare Stormy Way for $65,000 at the 2006 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale while she was carrying Capt. Candyman Can. Eaton Sales consigned the mare as agent.
Stormy Way foaled a Closing Argument colt this year and is in foal to UnbridledÕs Song. Her yearling colt by Purge died as the result of a paddock accident.
Alone and in partnership, Lantern Hill has bred additional graded stakes winners Mr. John and Ordway as well as other added-money winners Terrific Challenge and Conchacer. The last-named won the Aug. 8 Forward Pass Stakes at Arlington Park. Other stakes winners foaled and raised at Lantern Hill include champion Dreaming of Anna and her grade II stakes-winning full brother Lewis Michael.
All eight of CandyÕs RideÕs stakes winners are added-money winners this year. Candy Ride stood in 2009 at John SikuraÕs Hill ÔnÕ Dale Farms near Lexington for a fee of $12,500. He will stand in 2010 at William S. FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky.ÑD.S.
