I Want Revenge didnÕt let a poor start and a wall of horses in the stretch prevent him from winning the April 4 Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) at Aqueduct. The 3-year-old colt, who broke in the air, trailed early but got up to win by 11Ú2 lengths as the 1-2 favorite over West Side Bernie.
I Want Revenge figures to be one of the favorites in the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), not only off his Wood Memorial score but also off his triumph March 7 in the Gotham Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct in his last start. He recorded a 113 Beyer Speed Figure in his 81Ú2-length Gotham victory.
By Stephen Got Even, I Want Revenge races for his breeder, David J. Lanzman, in partnership with IEAH Stables, Puglisi Racing, and Charles N. Winner. Lanzman raced I Want Revenge through the Gotham. He sold a half-interest to IEAH March 30. Around the same time, IEAH sold a quarter-interest in 2008 champion 2-year-old filly Stardom Bound to Lanzman. Stardom Bound ran third in the Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland the day of the Wood Memorial.
IEAH and Paul Pompa Jr. won last yearÕs Kentucky Derby with Big Brown, who was voted champion 3-year-old male.
Lanzman, who campaigned 2001 Eclipse Award winner and Penske Auto Center BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Squirtle Squirt, privately bought I Want RevengeÕs dam, Meguial, after she ran second in the Argentine group I classics Polla de Potrancas (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) and Seleccion-Argentine Oaks. She arrived in the United States in 2002 and placed in three stakes in California in 2003. Last year Meguial was bred to Chapel Royal and sent to Argentina.
I Want Revenge was consigned to the 2008 Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training by NexStar, agent. He did not reach his reserve and was bought back for $95,000. He has earned $816,000.
The last Wood Memorial winner to win the Kentucky Derby was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000. Also this decade, two runners-up, Monarchos in 2001 and Funny Cide in 2003, captured the Run for the Roses.
Stephen Got Even has sired 17 stakes winners. He stands for $7,500 at William S. FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky.ÑD.S.
