Custom for Carlos started the new year the way he ended the old yearÑwith a stakes win. But this time it was with a graded stakes triumph, the second of his career.
Custom for Carlos, who won the Bet on Sunshine Handicap at Churchill Downs in November, captured the Jan. 9 Mr. Prospector Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park as the even-money favorite by three-quarters of a length over Past the Point. The 4-year-old son of More Than Ready ran the six furlongs in 1:10.07 over a sloppy track. Custom for CarlosÕ other graded score came in the Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park last summer.
David E. Hager II, owner of Idle Hour Farm near Lexington, is the breeder of Custom for Carlos. Hager, as agent, purchased Custom for CarlosÕ dam, Meadow Oaks, for $130,000 at the 1999 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Consigned by Runnymede Farm, agent for Cam Allard, Meadow Oaks was in foal to Dehere.
One of the reasons Hager sent Meadow Oaks to More Than Ready was that both have inbreeding to Col. E.R. BradleyÕs foundation mare La Troienne. Meadow OaksÕ broodmare sire is Seattle Slew, whose dam, My Charmer, is inbred 5x5 to La Troienne. More Than ReadyÕs maternal grandsire is Woodman, and WoodmanÕs dam, Playmate, is inbred 4x5 to La Troienne. More Than ReadyÕs dam, WoodmanÕs Girl, is inbred to La Troienne 6X5.
Custom for Carlos was consigned by Idle Hour, agent, to the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he failed to reach his reserve and was bought back for $145,000. That same day Custom for Carlos was purchased privately by current owners Homewrecker Racing and Avalon Farm.
Homewrecker, owned by Ron and Ricki Rashinski, has campaigned several other stakes winners, including Bushfire, winner of the 2006 Ashland Stakes (gr. I).
Hager was represented as breeder by additional 2009 stakes winners Theglow, Timeless Fashion, Victory Alleged, and Rodman, who won the Queens County Handicap (gr. III) for Barry K. Schwartz. Rodman is being pointed to the Feb. 6 Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park.
Meadow Oaks is in foal to More Than Ready and is due March 1. Breeding plans are undecided.
More Than Ready has sired 66 stakes winners, including additional 2010 added-money winner In the Slips. More Than Ready was represented by 17 stakes winners in 2009. More Than Ready stands at Tom SimonÕs Vinery near Lexington. His 2010 fee is $30,000.ÑD.S.
