There certainly was big drama in the Swale Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park March 28. Big Drama was a half-length in front of This Ones for Phil at the wire but was disqualified for interference. As a result, This Ones for Phil notched his first graded stakes victory.
Trained by Rick Dutrow, This Ones for Phil came into the Swale off a fifth-place finish to Quality Road in the Feb. 28 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II). Quality Road was also back in action March 28 and took the Blackberry presents the 58th running of the Florida Derby (gr. I) one race after the Swale.
This Ones for Phil began his career as a homebred for Gilbert Campbell and was trained by Kathleen OÕConnell. As a 2-year-old, the Untuttable gelding won the Seacliff Stakes, finished second in the Foolish Pleasure Stakes, and ran third in the Arthur I. Appleton Juvenile Turf Stakes.
After that third-place finish This Ones for Phil was sold privately to Paul P. Pompa Jr., who campaigns him in partnership with Jack Mandato and Michael Dubb. In his first start as a Dutrow trainee, This Ones for Phil won the Jan. 24 Sunshine Millions Dash Stakes.
This Ones for Phil was bred in Florida out of the unraced Septieme Ciel mare HeavenÕs Gate. The chestnut gelding was offered at the 2006 Ocala BreedersÕ Sales Co.Õs October mixed sale but failed to meet his reserve when bidding stopped at $7,000. He has now earned $325,340.
Campbell bought HeavenÕs Gate in foal to Is It True for $30,000 at the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale from Eaton Sales, agent. He stands This Ones for PhilÕs sire, Untuttable, at his Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, Fla.
HeavenÕs Gate is no longer owned by Campbell. In 2006, Boone River Farm bought the chestnut mare in foal to Untuttable for $5,000 at the same sale where This Ones for Phil RNAÕd. HeavenÕs Gate has a yearling Candy Ride colt and is in foal to Artie Schiller.
Untuttable is the sire of seven stakes winners. The 13-year-old son of Unbridled stands at Stonehedge for a fee of $5,000.ÑA.H.D
