In just his third career start, Tale of Ekati won his first graded stakes race when he defeated Kodiak Kowboy by a length in the Sept. 15 Futurity Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park. In his two previous starts, the 2-year-old Tale of the Cat colt broke his maiden July 7 and ran second to Ready’s Image in the July 26 Sanford Stakes (gr. II).
Charles Fipke bred and races Tale of Ekati, who is trained by Barclay Tagg. Fipke, who is the owner and president of C.F. Minerals and a world renowned diamond explorer, also bred and raced Perfect Soul, winner of the 2003 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) and a Canadian champion. Fipke, along with Dr. Stewart Blusson, are credited with discovering a diamond mine in Canada, now called the Ekati Mine. It is considered to be one of the world’s largest and Canada’s only diamond mine. He owns 10% of the mine.
Tale of Ekati was bred in Kentucky out of the Sunday Silence mare Silence Beauty, who was bred in Japan. A $1-million yearling, Silence Beauty was last offered at the 2004 Keeneland November mixed sale while she was carrying Tale of Ekati. Consigned by Winchester Farm, agent, she sold to R.J. Bennett, agent, for $525,000.
Silence Beauty is out of the multiple grade I-winning Nijinsky II mare Maplejinsky, who was sold to Osamu Yasuda for $2.7 million at the 1994 Keeneland November mixed sale by Chesapeake Farm. Maplejinsky is also the dam of champion filly Sky Beauty (by Blushing Groom), who won the Filly Triple Crown and went on to produce group III winner Hurricane Cat (by Storm Cat). Another one of Maplejinsky’s daughters, Our Country Place (by Pleasant Colony), is the dam of grade I winner Pleasant Home and grade II winner Country Hideaway and is the granddam of grade I winner Pine Island and grade II winner Boca Grande.
Silence Beauty’s yearling colt by Perfect Soul was sold to Steven Silver, agent, for $775,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale by Denali Stud, agent. He previously was sold to J. McCormack International by Darby Dan Farm, agent, for $280,000 at the 2006 Keeneland November mixed sale.
Silence Beauty is boarded at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington, which is where Perfect Soul stands at stud. The 10-year-old mare was barren to Perfect Soul for this year and is in foal to that stallion on a Feb. 24 cover.
Tale of the Cat is the sire of 41 stakes winners. The 13-year-old son of Storm Cat’s 12 other added-money winners this year include Ashley’s Kitty (gr. III) and Bantry Bay (Aust-III). He stood the 2007 season for a fee of $37,500 at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.—A.H.D.
