Kodiak Kowboy showed good early speed and drew off to a 23¼4 length victory in the $165,150 Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) for 2-year olds at Churchill Downs July 7.
Kodiak Kowboy raced third three-wide in the clear in the opening quarter mile of the six-furlong Bashford Manor before he pulled to the lead under jockey Corey Lanerie approaching the quarter pole. Lanerie shook the reins and went to the whip at the top of the stretch before the tandem opened up on the field.
Trainer Steve Asmussen swept the Saturday stakes at Churchill, having won the Debutante (gr. III) for 2-year-old fillies with Rated Fiesty.
The Bashford Manor was Kodiak Kowboy’s third straight win and his second in a stakes race as the colt by Posse entered the race off a two-length win in the Victoria Stakes June 17 at Woodbine. The Victoria gave Posse his first stakes win as a sire.
Kodiak Kowboy races for Vinery Stables, which purchased the colt for $70,000 at the 2006 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s August sale of select yearlings. Kodiak Kowboy was consigned by Burleson Farms, agent.
As a weanling, Kodiak Kowboy was sold at the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. J.W. Singer purchased Kodiak Kowboy for $40,000 from consignor Hartwell Farm, agent.
Hartwell Farm bred Kodiak Kowboy in Kentucky. He is out of the unraced mare Kokadrie, by Coronado’s Quest.
Kokadrie sold for $80,000 as a yearling at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale. Just over two years later, she returned to the auction ring at Keeneland and fetched $110,000 at the November breeding stock sale while in foal to Maria’s Mon.
Hartwell Farm acquired Kokadrie while she was carrying Kodiak Kowboy for $75,000 from consignor Woods Edge Farm, agent, at the 2004 Keeneland November sale. Kokadrie went to auction at the Keeneland November sale for a third straight year and was sold to BJB Holdings for $43,000 while carrying a colt by Golden Missile, her last reported foal.
Maria’s Quest, by Maria’s Mon, was also a winner at 2, having won a maiden special weight at Hollywood Park in 2006 in her debut. She was claimed for $22,500 by Art Sherman in her last start June 17, the same day Kodiak Kowboy won the Victoria Stakes.
Freshman sire Posse is represented by two stakes winners, including Possetothemax. The grade II-winning son of Silver Deputy stands for $12,500 at Vinery near Lexington.—J.S.F
