In his first start since being pulled up in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), Big Brown found enough to get past 20-1 shot Coal Play and win the Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) by 13Ú4 lengths at Monmouth Park Aug. 3.
ÒThis was another dimension for Big Brown,Ó said co-owner Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables. ÒHe showed his heart and courage.Ó
Big Brown, who is trained by Rick Dutrow, won his first five races, including the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands, and Preakness Stakes (all gr. I), before losing the Belmont. The 3-year-old Boundary colt is owned in partnership with Paul Pompa Jr., Andrew Cohen, Gary Tolchin, and Pegasus Holdings Group.
Dr. Gary KnappÕs Monticule bred Big Brown in Kentucky out of the winning Nureyev mare Mien, who was a homebred for Knapp. Big Brown is MienÕs second foal, and her first foal, Snake River Canyon, is also a winner.
Mien is out of the stakes-placed Lear Fan mare Miasma, who Knapp bought for $350,000 at the 1998 Keeneland November mixed sale from Eaton Sales, agent. Miasma was carrying Mien at the time.
Several fillies that are closely related to Big Brown will be offered at the upcoming Keeneland September yearling sale. His half-sister by Touch Gold is entered, as is MienÕs half-sister, a filly by Theatrical.
ÒThey are both being prepared and being walked every day,Ó said Knapp. ÒWe hope they just look marvelous when they walk into the ring. We are very happy with the whole family.Ó
Mien delivered a Belong to Me filly April 23 and is in foal to Stormy Atlantic.
ÒMien is in great shape,Ó said Knapp. ÒHer Belong to Me filly is doing great. SheÕs racing around the pasture like she knows what she is up to.Ó
Miasma delivered a Theatrical colt May 1 and is in foal to Marquetry.
Boundary is the sire of 24 stakes winners including additional 2008 added-money winners Salinja, A. J. Bakes, and Lady Belsara. The 18-year-old son of Danzig was pensioned in 2005 at the Hancock familyÕs Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky.ÑA.H.D.
