It was smooth sailing for Smooth Air in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park March 14, as he outfinished Finallymadeit to win by 11Ú4 lengths.

Trained by Bennie Stutts Jr., Smooth Air came into the Gulfstream Park Handicap off a half-length defeat in his seasonal debut, the Feb. 7 Tallahassee Stakes. The 4-year-old Smooth Jazz colt races for Brian BurnsÕ Mount Joy Stables.

ÒOnce we decided not to go to Dubai, we targeted this race to see if he could be effective at a one-turn mile because the major goal from here is the Met Mile (gr. I),Ó said Burns.

Smooth Air seems to have a fondness for Gulfstream. He also won last yearÕs Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) and finished second behind eventual champion 3-year-old male Big Brown in the Florida Derby (gr. I) while racing there.

An honest runner, Smooth Air has hit the board in 12 of 14 starts and is approaching one million dollars in earnings. His other stakes victories came in the 2008 runnings of the Ohio Derby (gr. II) and the Needles Stakes.

ÒHeÕs been so special for us,Ó said Burns. ÒHeÕs a third-generation homebred.Ó

Smooth Air was bred in Florida out of the winning French Deputy mare Air France. Burns bought Air FranceÕs dam, the stakes-winning Known Fact mare Twin Propeller, as a yearling for $18,000 from Nuckols Farm at the 1994 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Twin Propeller is one of five stakes winners out of the winning Mr. Leader mare Ahpo Hel. Another one of Ahpo HelÕs daughters, the winning Honour and Glory mare General Jeanne, is the dam of grade II winners Justwhistledixie and Chace City. A multiple stakes winner, Justwhistledixie joined the graded stakes ranks with a win in the March 1 Davona Dale Stakes (gr. II).

Smooth Air is the second foal out of Air France. The 10-year-old mareÕs youngest offspring is a yearling Five Star Day filly named Air Guitar. Air France was bred to Tale of the Cat for 2009.

Smooth Air is the initial stakes winner by Smooth Jazz. The 10-year-old son of Storm Boot stands at Buckridge Farm near Kinderhook, N.Y., for $3,000.ÑA.H.D.
