Favored Gayego scored a come-from-behind victory in the Oct. 11 Ancient Title Stakes (gr. I) during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park. It was the first grade I win for the 4-year-old colt, which also earned an automatic berth in the Nov. 7 Sentient Jet BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) because the Ancient Title was a BreedersÕ Cup ÒWin and YouÕre InÓ race. Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Gayego defeated Crown of Thorns by 11Ú4 lengths and covered the six furlongs in 1:08.28.
Gayego scored in the 2008 Arkansas Derby (gr. II) and San Pedro Stakes when he was owned by Cubanacan Stables and trained by Paulo Lobo. He later was sold privately to Sheikh MohammedÕs Godolphin operation, and he started racing for that stable in March of this year. Running in Dubai, which is ruled by Sheikh Mohammed, Gayego captured the Dayjur Mahab Al Shimaal (UAE-III) and finished second in the Godolphin Mile Sponsored By Etisalat (UAE-II). In his outing prior to the Ancient Title, Gayego won a six-furlong allowance/optional claiming race by a length Aug. 17 at Saratoga.
Hargus and Sandra Sexton bred Gayego in Kentucky and, through Warrendale Sales, sold the colt for $32,000 to Cubanacan Stables during the 2006 Keeneland September yearling auction.
GayegoÕs third dam, RibotÕs Branch (by Rungus), produced one stakes winner, Lot oÕ Ribot (by Lot oÕ Gold), who scored in the Columbus and Grand National Steeplechase Handicaps in 1986.
Gilded Time is the sire of Gayego and 52 additional stakes winners. The stallionÕs other added-money winners this year are Time Matters (Aust-III) and Mighty Rule. Winner of the 1992 BreedersÕ Cup Juvenile (gr. I), Gilded Time stands in Canada at Bar None Ranches near Dewinton in the province of Alberta. His 2009 stud fee was $7,500 (Canadian funds).ÐD.B.B.
