SlewÕs Tiznow proved he hasnÕt lost a step from last year. The 3-year-old Tiznow colt, who was grade I stakes-placed in 2007, won the Aug. 29 El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar in his first start in 11 months for Joseph LaCombe Stables.

A homebred, SlewÕs Tiznow captured the El Cajon in his first start for new trainer Doug OÕNeill, who took over from Greg Fox. As a 2-year-old, SlewÕs Tiznow broke his maiden in his second start and then ran second in the LaneÕs End BreedersÕ Futurity (gr. I) at Keeneland while trained by Patrick Biancone.

ÒThis horse was cut out to be a good one, and I think he will be,Ó OÕNeill said. ÒGreg Fox had him last year and brought him out for the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park, but he got sick and missed the race. Greg took him back home and got him well, and then sent him to Florida to get back in shape. Then he was sent to us about three months ago. HeÕs been training really well. His works arenÕt fast, but he gallops out strong after he works, so that works for him. I didnÕt expect this kind of performance today, but that just shows how good a horse he is.Ó

LaCombe also races SlewÕs TiznowÕs older graded stakes-winning full brother. SlewÕs Tizzy, a 4-year-old homebred, won last yearÕs Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) and Lone Star Derby (gr. III). He is in training with OÕNeill at Hollywood Park.

SlewÕs Tiznow is being pointed toward the Oct. 25 BreedersÕ Cup Dirt Mile at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

LaCombe also is represented this year by additional homebred graded stakes winners Azul Leon and TrickÕs Pic, both of whom are trained by OÕNeill. LaCombeÕs earlier stakes winners include 1997 Horse of the Year and champion 2-year-old male Favorite Trick.

LaCombe boards SlewÕs TiznowÕs dam, Hepatica, at Noel MurphyÕs Castle Park Farm near Georgetown, Ky. She produced a Stormy Atlantic colt this year and is in foal to Tiznow.

Tiznow has sired 15 stakes winners. His 10 added-money winners this year include Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner DaÕ Tara, multiple grade I winner Colonel John, and three other graded stakes winners. Tiznow stands at Bill Casner and Kenny TrouttÕs WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky. His 2008 fee was $30,000.ÑD.S.
