VictorÕs Cry didnÕt waste any time winning the May 31 Shoemaker Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park. The final time, 1:32.88, is the fastest clocking in the Shoemaker since Designed for Luck scored in 1:32.81 in 2004.
A 5-year-old son of Street Cry, VictorÕs Cry is a relative newcomer to stakes competition. He didnÕt race in a stakes until August 2009, and since then he has finished in the top four in five of them.
In addition to the Shoemaker, which he got up to win by a head after trailing by 41Ú2 lengths at the eighth pole, he ran second in the San Simeon Handicap (gr. IIIT) in April and fourth in both the Joe Hernandez Stakes in March and the Del Mar Mile Handicap (gr. IIT) last August.
VictorÕs Cry has raced his entire career for Bob and Michele Billings of Florida in the name of Equilete Stable under the care of trainer Eoin Harty.
Legacy Farm, owned by Larry Johnson, is the breeder of VictorÕs Cry, who was foaled in Virginia. VictorÕs Cry was consigned to the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale by Needham-Betz Thoroughbreds, agent, and was purchased for $150,000 by Mark McEntee, agent.
Legacy also is the breeder of Partners Due, a stakes winner at Belmont Park and a two-time added-money winner at Colonial Downs in the mid-2000s.
VictorÕs CryÕs dam, Short Time, proved hardy enough to race from ages 2 through 7. She was stakes-placed five times. She also is the dam of stakes-placed Clever Strike.
Short Time did not produce an offspring this year and is booked to Street CryÕs champion son Street Sense. She currently is boarded at Needham-Betz near Lexington. When pronounced in foal, she will be sent to Legacy near Middleburg, Va.
Street Cry has sired 37 stakes winners. His seven added-money winners this year also include two-time champion Zenyatta (gr. I), Blues Street (gr. IIT), Freedom Star (gr. III), Desert Party (UAE-III), and Tallow (Aust-III). Street Cry stands for $150,000 at Sheikh MohammedÕs Darley near Lexington.ÑD.S.
