Spring House seems to enjoy doubling his pleasure as he ages. Not only has the 7-year-old won consecutive runnings of the San Luis Obispo Handicap (gr. IIT) in 2008 and 2009, he has now completed a successful defense of his Del Mar Handicap (gr. IIT) victory of 2008 by repeating in that Del Mar contest Aug. 30. Spring House crossed the million-dollar threshold in earnings with his Del Mar score, which was his seventh career stakes win.

Spring House is owned by R.D. Hubbard, the former CEO of Hollywood Park and the majority owner of Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. Hubbard bred Spring House in partnership with Connie Sczesny and the Machado familyÕs Rio Claro Thoroughbreds. When Spring House was RNAÕd for $29,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was consigned by Craig BandoroffÕs Denali Stud, agent, Hubbard bought out his co-breeders to own Spring House outright.

ÒHe was a plain brown wrapper,Ó recalled HubbardÕs farm/racing manager Tom Goncharoff of Spring House as a yearling. ÒBut I told Mr. Hubbard not to let him go cheaply, because he was a nice horse; very good physically.Ó

Spring Star, a Brazilian bred, is the dam of Spring House, and was part of the package when Hubbard and Sczesny acquired half of the Rio Claro racing and breeding operation 10 years ago. Spring Star was a multiple group winner in her native country. Her daughter Spring Free produced Grand Slam Andre, a Grand Slam colt, who has won both the Middleground Stakes at Lone Star Park and the Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park this year for owner J. Kirk Robison.

Foix, the second dam of Spring House, is also the dam of Brazilian 2-year-old champion filly Verinha. Foix is a group winner in Brazil as well.

Chester House, who died in 2003, is the sire of Spring House and 28 other stakes winners, including additional graded 2009 added-money winners Ventura and Lady Carlock. Chester House, out of the great broodmare Toussaud, stood at Khalid AbdullahÕs Juddmonte Farms near Lexington.ÑL.S.
