For the second consecutive year German import Proudinsky closed the year with a victory in the 11Ú8-mile San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita. The son of Silvano held on to defeat 7-5 favorite Loup Breton by a neck in 1:46.91 in the Dec. 27 feature.
Proudinsky, who arrived in the United States in 2006 after starting twice in Germany, captured the 2008 San Gabriel by three-quarters of a length in 1:48.39, a year after he had finished second in the stakes.
A millionaire, Proudinsky has raced since late 2008 for Johanna Louise Glen-Teven, a resident of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Proudinsky formerly was owned by Gary Tanaka.
Proudinsky has won or placed in 11 of 20 races in North America. He has won three other stakes, all graded, including the 2008-09 Mervin Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (gr. IIT) at Fair Grounds, and has placed in five added-money races. In a runner-up effort in the 2008 Monmouth Stakes on grass, he was beaten a neck by dual classic winner and subsequent champion Big Brown.
Proudinsky is trained by Humberto Ascanio, a former assistant to Bobby Frankel, who conditioned Proudinsky following the horseÕs arrival from Germany. Ascanio took charge of Proudinsky following FrankelÕs death Nov. 16.
Proudeyes, the dam of Proudinsky, followed her famous son to the U.S. She was bought by Fred SeitzÕ Brookdale Farm for $108,449 at the 2007 Tattersalls December breeding stock sale from Ronald Rauscher, agent, and sent to Kentucky. She was in foal to Lomitas.
Proudeyes, who resides at Brookdale near Versailles, Ky., is not in foal and is not yet booked for 2010. Her weanling colt by Corinthian sold for $110,000 at the 2009 Keeneland November breeding stock sale to Cecil Seaman, agent for Kaya and Kurt. Brookdale Sales consigned as agent.
Silvano has sired 25 stakes winners, including nine added-money winners of 2009. He stands at the Jacobs familyÕs Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. His 2010 fee is 50,000 rands (approximately $6,600).ÑD.S.
