German-bred Proudinsky, who was a runner-up in last yearÕs San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT), came through in the 2008 edition of the race Dec. 28 when he bested an international field by three-quarters of a length at Santa Anita Park.
The $150,000 San Gabriel, named for the mountain range that serves as a breathtaking backdrop at Santa Anita, ended a six-race losing streak for Proudinsky.
The San Gabriel marked the fifth victory in 17 starts and the third graded stakes win for Proudinsky, who was racing for the first time for Johnanna Louise Glen-Teven, a Manhattan Beach, Calif., resident.
A 5-year-old son of Silvano, Proudinsky was previously owned by Gary Tanaka, who was found guilty in November on three of 12 counts relating to securities fraud while he headed Amerindo Investment Advisors.
Starting his career in his native Germany where he was stakes-placed, Proudinsky was sent to the United States in 2006, and since then has placed in four other black-type contests, including the 2007 Citation Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park.
Bred by Dr. Rolf Wilhelms, Proudinsky is out of the Dashing Blade mare Proudeyes. The bay mare is also the dam of German group winner Proudance (by Tannenkonig), who captured the 2005 Wettannahmen Springer-Meile (Ger-III) at Koln.
Proudeyes was acquired for $108,449 by Fred SeitzÕ Brookdale Farm at last yearÕs Tattersalls December mixed sale from Ronald Rauscher, agent.
Ò(Proudinsky) ran third in the Citation right before the sale, and we saw that (trainer Bobby) Frankel had him, so that was pretty encouraging,Ó said Seitz of why he had purchased Proudeyes. ÒA couple other things made her attractive, and we got her for a pretty decent price we thought.Ó
Proudeyes produced her first named foal since Proudinsky in 2008, a Lomitas filly named Pavie. In foal to Corinthian for 2009, Proudeyes is booked to Street Boss.
German champion Silvano is the sire of 14 stakes winners. Among his nine stakes winners of 2008 are graded victors Kings Gambit (SAf-I), Fair Breeze (Fr-II), and Happy Spirit (SAf-II). Silvano, winner of the 2001 Arlington Million (gr. IT), stood for 50,000 Rands (about $5,275) at Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. He will stand in Germany for 2009ÑE.M.
