(gr. IIT , 9f , to Daytona (IRE), defeating Medici Code (GB), Storm Military (ARG), Lang Field, Sensational Humor ).
Irish-bred Daytona, who came into his own during the fall of 2007, closed out his 3-year-old season with a three-quarters length victory over German-bred Proudinsky in the Dec. 30 San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita.
The San Gabriel was Daytona’s third graded stakes victory in a row after taking the Oct. 13 Oak Tree Derby (gr. IIT) and Nov. 25 Hollywood Derby (gr. IT). Dan Hendricks trains the chestnut Indian Ridge gelding for Jeff Davenport, Tom Lenner, Jess Ravich, and Thomas Murray.
Daytona began his career last February in England for Sheikh Mohammed, but was sold privately to his current connections that spring after Alex Solis Jr., the son of jockey Alex Solis, put the partnership together. He won one of five starts stateside before going on his current winning streak.
“This horse really matured after Del Mar and my assistant, Francisco (Alvarado), did a lot with him,” Hendricks said. “The horse is real healthy right now, doing good, and just came into his own.”
Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock agent, John Ferguson, purchased Daytona for $434,592 at the 2005 Goffs September yearling sale from his breeder, Irish National Stud.
Daytona was bred out of the unraced Blushing John mare Kyka. The chestnut mare, who was bred by Allen E. Paulson, was sold in foal to Theatrical to Curragh Bloodstock Agency for $500,000 at the 1999 Keeneland November mixed sale by Lane’s End, agent for Brookside Farms. She was sent to Ireland in 2000.
Kyka is the last foal out of the group I-winning Tyrant mare L’Attrayante, who won both the French One Thousand Guineas (Fr-I) and Goffs Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) in 1983. L’Attrayante is also the dam of Madeleine’s Dream (by Theatrical), who won the 1993 French One Thousand Guineas, and her full sister, Miss Lenora, who is a grade III winner. Miss Lenora went on to produce multiple grade III winner Stylish (by Thunder Gulch).
Daytona is the first stakes winner out of Kyka, but her five other foals to race are also winners. The 14-year-old mare is also the dam of a juvenile Celtic Swing colt and was barren to Indian Ridge for 2007. She is in foal to Verglas, while her half- sisters Miss Lenora and Madeleine’s Dream are both barren for 2008.
Indian Ridge is the sire of 77 stakes winners including additional 2007 added-money winners Indian Ink (Eng-I), Linngari (It-I), and Appalachian Trail (in England). The son of Ahonoora died in 2006 after suffering an apparent heart attack at the Irish National Stud. He was 21.—A.H.D.
