DonÕt give Horse of the Year honors to the filly Rachel Alexandra just yet. Not the way Gio Ponti is running.

Gio Ponti captured the Aug. 8 Arlington Million Stakes (gr. IT) over an international field for his fourth grade I win this year. The 4-year-old son of Tale of the Cat kicked it into high gear approaching the stretch in the 11Ú4-mile stakes and won as the 3-2 favorite by 11Ú4 lengths over a determined Just as Well.

After beginning the year with an unplaced finish in the Strub Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita, Gio Ponti captured the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (gr. IT) at Santa Anita, the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, and the July 11 Man oÕ War Stakes (gr. IT) at Belmont.

Gio Ponti was bred in Kentucky by Shane RyanÕs Kilboy Estate. Ryan serves as president of Castleton Lyons, which races Gio Ponti. Castleton Lyons, founded by RyanÕs late father, Tony Ryan, in 2001, is located near Lexington.

Gio Ponti most likely got his taste for the turf from his second dam, Salt Spring. While Gio PontiÕs dam, Chipeta Springs, was stakes-placed once in her career and that was on turf, Salt Spring won or placed in nine grass stakes after her arrival from her native Argentina, where she was a group I winner.

Salt Spring won the Yerba Buena Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Golden Gate Fields and a division of the Osunitas Stakes on grass at Del Mar. Her stakes-placings included efforts in the Ramona (gr. IT), Santa Barbara (gr. IT), and Wilshire (gr. IIT) Handicaps in Southern California. Her class also was evident on the main track, where she was grade I stakes-placed.

Chipeta Springs is the dam of additional stakes winners Fisher Pond and Bon Jovi Girl. Three-year-old Bon Jovi Girl won the SusanÕs Girl Stakes at Delaware Park in June and is twice graded stakes-placed this year. She also was a stakes winner last year.

Chipeta Springs produced a filly this year by Castleton Lyons stallion Bernstein. She later was covered by UnbridledÕs Song but did not get in foal. She then was bred July 3 to Bernstein and has been pronounced in foal.

Chipeta SpringsÕ 2-year-old colt, Man On the Moon, is in training with Gio PontiÕs conditioner, Christophe Clement.

Tale of the Cat has sired 61 stakes winners. His eight stakes winners of 2009 also include Cat Moves (gr. I). Tale of the Cat stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2009 fee was $30,000.ÑD.S.
