Won at 4MEADOWLANDS CUP S.
(gr. II , 9f , defeating Kiss the Kid, Anak Nakal, Racketeer, Cool Coal Man, Good and Lucky, It's a Bird, Great Debater ).
Ironically, the only bump Darley StableÕs Etched has hit in an otherwise smooth-sailing but sporadic career happened in Dubai. In February of his 3-year-old year, after winning his two starts as a juvenile, including the Nashua Stakes (gr. III), he finished fourth in the Gulf News U.A.E. Two Thousand Guineas (UAE-III) at Nad Al Sheba. Off for more than nine months, he returned to the winnerÕs circle at Aqueduct in late November. After another lengthy hiatus the 4-year-old returned to the races at Saratoga, winning a nine-furlong allowance/optional claimer as a prep for his reappearance in stakes company, the Oct. 16 Meadowlands Cup Stakes (gr. II). The chestnut son of Forestry, ridden by Alan Garcia and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, lay just off the pace of Great Debater before moving to the lead on the final turn of the nine-furlong race. Although Kiss the Kid engaged the favorite in a gut-checking battle through the stretch, the Darley colorbearer bravely fought off the contender, prevailing by a neck. Another five lengths separated the top two from third-place finisher Anak Nakal. The time on a sloppy track was a brisk 1:45.93, less than a half-second off the track record.
A Darley homebred, Etched is the second foal from the grade I-winning mare Unbridled Elaine, whom Darley acquired in foal to Forestry for $4.4 million at the 2004 Keeneland November sale. A consistent performer on the track, the daughter of UnbridledÕs Song won six of 11 starts and earned $1,770,740. As a 3-year-old she had surprised a field of seasoned grade I distaffers by eking out a head victory in the BreedersÕ Cup Distaff (gr. I) over the previous yearÕs winner, Spain. Unbridled Elaine is one of two grade I winners produced by her dam, stakes winner Carols Folly. The other, Glitter Woman (by Glitterman), won four consecutive graded stakes as a 3-year-old, highlighted by the Ashland Stakes (gr. I). As a broodmare, Glitter Woman produced grade I winner Political Force (by UnbridledÕs Song), winner of the 2007 Suburban Handicap. Unbridled Elaine is also a half-sister to Gwenjinsky (by Seattle Dancer) who has produced grade II winner Lead Story (by EditorÕs Note) and stakes winner Capejinsky (by Cape Town). This female family, which appears to be on the upswing after a period of consistency with no brilliance, traces back to Swoon, the dam of stakes winners Dogoon and SwoonÕs Son, full brothers who were not only good racehorses in the 1950s but also respectable sires whose names can still be found in modern-day pedigrees.
Unbridled Elaine has an unraced juvenile A.P. Indy filly, Perceive; a yearling Distorted Humor colt; and a weanling colt by Discreet Cat, who like Etched is a son of Forestry.
Forestry is the sire of 35 stakes winners. Among his five 2009 added-money winners is CarolynÕs Cat (gr. II). Forestry stands at Taylor Made Stallions and his 2009 fee was $40,000.-T.H.
