If Rail TripÕs performance in the June 12 Californian Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park is at all foreshadowing of how his trip will go when he attempts to defend his title in the July 10 Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I), then the bay gelding has nothing to worry about.

The son of Jump Start, who came into the Californian off a victory in the May 8 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood, easily won the former race by 23Ú4 lengths under jockey Rafael Bejarano. Five-year-old Rail Trip made amends for a loss as the public choice in the 2009 Californian. A year ago he was second behind Informed in the event.

The victory was the eighth in 11 attempts for Rail Trip. The Kentucky-bred has earned $967,790.

Rail Trip is campaigned by Mace and Samantha SiegelÕs Jay Em Ess Stable. Samantha Siegel, a Southern California-based conformation and pedigree expert, has campaigned several other stakes winners in addition to Rail Trip, including 2010 grade III winner Arson Squad and other graded victors DeclanÕs Moon, Love of Money, and Suave.

Bred by Kevin and Maryann DonohueÕs Ocala, Fla.-based Donarra Thoroughbreds, Rail Trip was bought for $200,000 by Jay Em Ess at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale from Eaton Sales, agent.

He is out of the winning Carson City mare Sweet Trip. A daughter of the stakes-winning Skywalker mare Stellar Affair, Sweet Trip is a half sister to multiple stakes producer Whisperifyoudare (by Red Ransom). Rail Trip is inbred 4x5 to Secretariat, 4x3 to Mr. Prospector, 5x5 to Buckpasser, and 5x4 to Raise a Native.

Rail Trip is the first foal and first starter produced by Sweet Trip, whose last reported offspring is a 2-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly.

Jump Start is the sire of 19 stakes winners, including other 2010 added-money winners Bold Start, Dryfly, and Icabad Crane. Jump Start stands for $10,000 at Tarry BrattonÕs Ghost Ridge Farms near Felton, Pa.ÑE.M.
