Tres Borrachos got his act together in a big way in the July 12 Swaps Stakes (gr. II) at Hollywood Park. The 3-year-old Ecton Park gelding beat Two Step Salsa by 11Ú4 lengths, with grade I winner Colonel John finishing third. It marked Tres BorrachosÕ first stakes win after three graded stakes-placings this year.

Tres Borrachos, Spanish for Òthree drunks,Ó races for brothers C. Beau Greely and John Greely IV in partnership with Phil Houchens and Brad Scott. Beau Greely, who trains Tres Borrachos, and his brother and Houchens majored in sociology at the University of Kentucky.

The Greelys own Wintergreen Stallion Station near Midway, Ky., where Tres Borrachos was foaled and raised and where Ecton Park stands. Tres Borrachos was bred by John Greely, Houchens, and Robert Shapiro. Beau Greely and Scott, in partnership with others, bred and raced grade I winner Borrego, who stands at Wintergreen.

Tres Borrachos received his name as a 2-year-old after John Greely and Houchens had watched him work at Calumet FarmÕs training center near Lexington. Analyzing the workout over a few beers later in the day, Greely and Houchens got in touch with Beau, and it wasnÕt long before the three men agreed on the name Tres Borrachos.

Tres Borrachos was consigned to the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale by John Greely, agent, and was bought back for $37,000. A month later, Greely consigned him as agent to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale, where Houchens bought him for $7,000. In September 2007, Tres Borrachos began his racing career for the Greelys and Houchens.

John Greely bought Tres BorrachosÕ dam, PeteÕs Fancy, for $80,000 as a maiden mare at the 2002 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. She was consigned by Woodlands, agent for Overheath Stable.

ÒWe were breeding for soundness.Ó Greely said. ÒEcton Park (a grade I winner) was a sound runner and so was PeteÕs Fancy. She was a stakes winner and had made 40 starts.Ó

PeteÕs Fancy, by Peteski, had won 10 races, placed in nine others, and was graded stakes-placed.

PeteÕs Fancy, whose first three foals are by Ecton Park, produced a War Front colt this year. She is not in foal.

Ecton Park has sired nine stakes winners, including additional 2008 added-money winner Candlestick Park. His 2008 fee at Wintergreen Stallion Station was $7,500.ÑD.S.
