Won at 3LAZARO BARRERA MEMORIAL S.
(gr. III , 7f , defeating Afleet Ruler, Dixie Chatter, Wind's Legacy, Salute the Sarge, Rapidity (GB) ).
Two Step Salsa danced away from his competition early on and never looked back as he defeated Afleet Ruler by three lengths in the Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. III) at Hollywood Park May 18.
The 3-year-old Petionville colt is trained by Julio Canani and races as a homebred for Jeff Nielsen’s Everest Stables. Two Step Salsa was making just his fourth career start in the Barrera and came into the race off a second-place finish in the April 25 Harry Henson Stakes.
Two Step Salsa did not race as a juvenile. He broke his maiden at first asking Jan. 20 at Santa Anita and followed that victory with a win in an allowance/optional claiming race over the same track March 7 before competing in stakes company.
Nielsen, a real estate investor, bred Two Step Salsa in Kentucky out of the unraced Seattle Slew mare Two to Waltz. He also campaigned the colt’s sire, Petionville, who was a grade II winner for Everest Stables.
A resident of Stillwater, Minn., Nielsen got into the Thoroughbred industry with the opening of Canterbury Downs in Minnesota in the mid-1980s. He got into the breeding aspect of the industry in the early 1990s, and he boards his horses at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm near Lexington. Another one of his major runners, multiple grade I winner Island Fashion, is also by Petionville. She delivered her first foal, a Storm Cat filly, Feb. 4 at that Central Kentucky farm, which is also where Petionville stands at stud.
All of Two to Waltz’ foals have been bred by Nielsen. The mare was offered at the 2001 Keeneland January mixed sale in foal to Skip Away by Hopewell Farm, agent for John and Betty Mabee, who bred the mare. She was purchased by Questroyal Stable for $38,000, but the resulting colt, who was bred by Everest, died. Two to Waltz is a full sister to stakes winner My True Lady. They are out of the winning Storm Bird mare Lady for Two.
Two Step Salsa is the second of three Petionville foals out of Two to Waltz. The first, a filly named Island Boogie, is also a winner. The 12-year-old mare has a yearling colt by that stallion and is in foal to him for 2008.
Petionville is the sire of 24 stakes winners including additional 2008 added-money winners Preciousville and Snake Proof. The 16-year-old son of Seeking the Gold stands at Crestwood for a fee of $15,000.—A.H.D.
