Albertus Maximus proved he hasnÕt lost a step since winning the TVG BreedersÕ Cup Dirt Mile at Oak Tree at Santa Anita last October. The 5-year-old son of Albert the Great captured the Jan. 31 Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park in his first start since the Dirt Mile and upped his career earnings past the $1.2-million mark.
The 11Ú8-mile Donn was Albertus MaximusÕ first start for Sheikh HamdanÕs Shadwell Stable and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Albertus Maximus formerly raced for his breeders, Brandon L. and Marianne Chase of California.
For the Chases last year, Albertus Maximus won the Windy Sands Handicap in track-record time of 1:35.37 for a mile at Del Mar and ran third in the Goodwood Stakes (gr. I) at Oak Tree. In 2007 he finished second in the Swaps BreedersÕ Cup Stakes (gr. II) and the Affirmed Handicap (gr. III).
Albertus Maximus is being pointed toward the $6-million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 28 at 11Ú4 miles. Sheikh Hamdan, a member of the ruling family of Dubai, won the 2007 World Cup with Invasor and the 1999 running with homebred Almutawakel. Both horses earned a Dubai championship the year of their World Cup scores. Invasor, North AmericaÕs Horse of the Year and champion older male of 2006, also went into the World Cup off a score in the Donn. He too was trained by McLaughlin.
Albertus MaximusÕ second dam, Race the Wild Wind, was a multiple graded stakes winner for the Chases. By SunnyÕs Halo, Race the Wild Wind won the 1992 Fantasy (gr. II) and Princess (gr. II) Stakes and the 1993 Santa Maria Handicap (gr. I).
Albertus Maximus is the sole stakes winner from the Forty Niner mare Chasethewildwind. Her youngest offspring is a Malibu Moon yearling colt bred by the Chases.
At the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, Albertus MaximusÕ half-brother by Rock Hard Ten was sold to Thomas Moran for $150,000. Eaton Sales consigned as agent.
Albert the Great, a grade I winner at 3, has sired four stakes winners. After standing his stud career in Kentucky, he stands at Dr. William J. SolomonÕs Pin Oak Lane Farm near New Freedom, Pa. His 2009 fee is $3.500,ÑD.S.
