What a difference two months makes. On July 28, Cost of Freedom was lost at Del MarÕs claim box by homebred owner Harris Farms for $50,000. HeÕs now won three straight, set two track records at Del Mar, and added a grade I win to his burgeoning credentials.
Cost of FreedomÕs headline win came Sept. 27 when the 5-year-old gelding notched his first added-money victory in the Ancient Title Stakes (gr. I) at Santa AnitaÕs Oak Tree meet. His six furlongs over the new Pro-Ride strip was won in an eye-popping 1:07.53 by a game half-length.
Harris FarmsÕ loss was Gary and Cecil BarberÕs gain. The brothers are fresh off the leading owner title at Del Mar. Their 14 wins were a record for owners in a single season at the seaside track. One of the wins came in the Cougar II Handicap with grade II winner Zappa, who, like Cost of Freedom, was a Barber claim.
ÒIt was a gutsy claim,Ó said trainer John Sadler of Cost of Freedom. ÒMr. (Gary) Barber liked his race record. I was a little concerned that he hadnÕt run that many times, but he was always very good. He was always right there. HeÕs a horse that likes synthetics.Ó
Barber is accustomed to high-risk endeavors. The South African native is co-chief executive of Spyglass Entertainment, producer of hits like ÒThe Sixth SenseÓ and ÒSeabiscuit.Ó He immigrated to the U.S. in 1982 after winning a trip to the Arlington Million in a handicapping contest.
Cost of Freedom debuted as a sophomore at Del Mar in 2006. He captured a $40,000 maiden claimer in a sharp 1:09.81 and looked to have a bright future but instead spent the next 18 months on the sidelines. Breeders John C. and Carole Harris exercised patience, gelded him, and brought him back this past March. Cost of Freedom hasnÕt been off the board since.
Sadler indicated the Oct. 25 Sentient BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Santa Anita would likely be next.
Veteran California sire CeeÕs Tizzy is the sire of Cost of Freedom and 35 other stakes winners, including champions Tiznow and Gourmet Girl. The 21-year-old Relaunch stallion also has Tiz Elemental (gr. III) among his seven added-money winners in 2008. CeeÕs Tizzy stood the 2008 season at Harris Farms near Coalinga, Calif., for $7,500.ÑJ.W.
