Cowboy Cal served notice that he bears watching in the older male category. A 4-year-old and the youngest of the nine contestants in the Jan. 10 San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita, Cowboy Cal held on to win by a nose over Informed and then survived an inquiry for alleged interference in the final sixteenth of a mile. His time for the 11Ú16 miles was 1:41.26.
Cowboy Cal, a multiple graded stakes winner in 2008, is the sole horse owned by Robert and Janice McNair. The McNairs sold all their horses under the Stonerside Stable name, except Cowboy Cal, to Sheikh MohammedÕs Darley operation in August 2008. At the time, Stonerside owned about 250 horses. Also included in the sale were 2,000-acre Stonerside Stable near Paris, Ky., and a training center in Aiken, S.C. The deal was completed Oct. 6.
Among the horses that went to Darley was Midshipman, who won the Sept. 3 Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) for Stonerside. Midshipman, who was bred by Stonerside, captured the Oct. 25 Bessemer Trust BreedersÕ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) for Darley. He is an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old male.
Cowboy Cal, by GiantÕs Causeway, was named after one of the McNairsÕ sons, Cal, who liked to dress up as a cowboy as a boy. During that time many years ago, another boy, whose parents were the McNairsÕ friends, took a liking to Cal in his cowboy clothes and started calling him Cowboy Cal. The boy, who was suffering from liver cancer, and his family were staying with the McNairs at their home near Houston while the youngster was undergoing chemotherapy. Tragically, the youngster died.
Stonerside is a finalist for an Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder. The outfit also bred 2008 graded stakes winners Chatain, Skylighter, and RavenÕs Pass. The last-named won the BreedersÕ Cup Classic (gr. I). RavenÕs Pass is a finalist for champion 3-year-old male.
Cowboy CalÕs dam, Texas Tammy, is kept at the Stonerside property, which has been renamed Darley at Stonerside. She is in foal to GiantÕs Causeway and is booked to Street Cry, who stands at Darley, USA, near Lexington.
GiantÕs Causeway, who ranked second on the 2008 leading sires list by progeny earnings, has sired 59 stakes winners. He was represented by 28 added-money winners in 2008. GiantÕs Causeway stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2009 fee is $125,000.ÑD.S.
