Desert Code made good in his first start after last yearÕs triumph in the inaugural BreedersÕ Cup Turf Sprint at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita in October. The 5-year-old son of E Dubai captured the Feb. 15 Daytona Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Santa Anita.
Unlike his performance in the Turf Sprint, where he raced near the back of the pack in the 14-horse field, Desert Code set the pace in the Daytona and won the about 61Ú2-furlong race by 21Ú2 lengths over Euroglide in 1:l2.58.
ÒAfter the first quarter-mile, I was saying. ÔThis is sweet,Õ Ó said jockey Aaron Gryder. ÒWhen he left the gate as well as he did, I just decided to drop his head and let him get away from them a little bit. They decided to take Euroglide back, and that helped us too. I know David (trainer Hofmans) thought that maybe heÕd need a race, but IÕve been working him, and heÕs worked well, but once you raise up on him, he doesnÕt gallop out that well. He may have gotten a little tired today, but he wasnÕt slowing down any.Ó
Desert Code, who topped the $1-million mark when he won the Turf Sprint, has made all but his first two starts for Susan OsborneÕs Tarabilla Farms. All seven of his wins have come for the outfit.
Osborne, either in her name or in the farmÕs name, has bred and/or raced earlier stakes winners Belle of Paducah, Cris the Swimmer, and Miss Lady Bug.
Bred in Kentucky by ClassicStar, Desert Code is out of stakes winner Chatta Code, dam of additional stakes winners Forest Code and Soul Onarazorsedge. Forest Code, by Forestry, was sold at the 2008 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale for $350,000 to Vin Cox Bloodstock. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned as agent.
Chatta Code is owned by John Sykes and Tony FergusonÕs Woodford Thoroughbreds, which is located near Versailles, Ky. Chatta Code, who is the dam of an E Dubai yearling filly, is in foal to Discreet Cat. She is booked to E Dubai.
Desert Code sold for $150,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale. He was bought by Mike Ryan, agent, from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
E Dubai has sired 11 stakes winners, including additional 2009 added-money winner What a Pear. E Dubai stands for $15,000 at Sheikh MohammedÕs Darley, USA, near Lexington.ÑD.S.
