Michael Martinez of Connecticut still gets a great deal of joy watching Commentator win. Martinez, the breeder of Commentator, joined owner Tracy Farmer and trainer Nick Zito in the winnerÕs circle after the geldingÕs victory in the July 26 Whitney Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga.
ÒIt was an exciting win by Commentator, and I gave Nick a big hug,Ó Martinez said. ÒGod bless America.Ó
Martinez feels he has plenty to be thankful for living in America, and itÕs not just because heÕs the breeder of one of the countryÕs top runners.
Born and raised in Cuba, Martinez came to the United States as what he calls an Òunaccompanied minorÓ in 1961 after communist insurgent Fidel Castro came to power. After spending time in an orphanage, he was reunited with his parents.
Martinez, who developed a liking for horses while growing up on a farm in Cuba, has been in racing some 25 years. He bought CommentatorÕs dam, Outsource, as a yearling in the name of his Victoria Farm for $14,000 at the 1999 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Taylor Made Sales Agency consigned as agent. Outsource had a crooked leg, but Martinez liked her breeding.
Outsource, by major sire Storm Bird, failed to race and became a broodmare as a 2-year-old in 2000. Commentator, by Distorted Humor, is her first foal.
Commentator is one of four winners from that 2001 foal crop bred by Martinez. One of the other runners also is by Distorted Humor, and the other two are by Sea of Secrets. The other three also have won in New York and one is stakes-placed.
Martinez experienced business and health problems in 2001 that forced him to sell most of his Thoroughbred holdings, including a farm in Kentucky. Commentator was consigned as a weanling by Taylor Made, agent, to that yearÕs Keeneland November breeding stock sale, where he was purchased for $45,000 by M & N Bloodstock.
The following year, Farmer, who owns Shadowlawn Farm near Midway, Ky., bought Commentator for $135,000 at the 2002 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale from Rick Ravensway and Christine Lopez.
Martinez no longer owns Outsource. She was bought by Brereton C. Jones for $25,000 at the 2002 Keeneland January sale.
Outsource is kept at JonesÕ Airdrie Farm near Midway, where she is in foal to Airdrie stallion Proud Citizen.
Commentator also won the 2005 Whitney.
Distorted Humor has sired 64 stakes winners. His six other stakes winners this year include Hystericalady (gr. II) and Like It Is (Aust-III). Distorted Humor stands at Bill Casner and Kenny TrouttÕs WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky. His 2008 fee was $300,000.ÑD.S.
