(gr. I , 9f , to Any Given Saturday, Hard Spun, defeating Imawildandcrazyguy, Cable Boy, Xchanger, Reata's Shadow ).
Any Given Saturday doesn’t need just a Saturday to run well. He does fine on some of the other days. He won the Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) Sunday Aug. 5 at Monmouth Park and the Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) Wednesday July 4 at Belmont Park. The margins were about the same—41¼2 lengths in the Haskell and four in the Dwyer.
Any Given Saturday, who beat Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Curlin in the Haskell, races for Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm in partnership with Satish and Anne Sanan’s Padua Stables. The latter outfit is a part-owner of Curlin, who was making his first start since finishing second in the June 9 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
A son of Distorted Humor, Any Given Saturday was bred by Racehorse Management, a division of WinStar, which is located near Midway, Ky. WinStar won last year’s Haskell with homebred Bluegrass Cat, who also finished second in last year’s Belmont, Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), and Travers Stakes (gr. I). Bluegrass Cat completed his first season at stud at WinStar.
Any Given Saturday’s dam, Weekend in Indy, waited until what would be her last start before winning, but she started her broodmare career on a winning note. Her first foal, Bohemian Lady (by Carson City), developed into a graded stakes winner who earned $423,231. After aborting her next two foals, Weekend in Indy produced Any Given Saturday.
Weekend in Indy, by A.P. Indy, was bought by Troutt’s wife, Lisa, for $290,000 at the 2000 Keeneland November breeding stock sale while carrying Bohemian Lady. She was consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
Any Given Saturday brought $1.1 million at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale. He was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, and purchased by Buzz Chace, agent.
Any Given Saturday’s yearling full sister is consigned by Taylor Made, agent, to the Keeneland September yearling sale.
Distorted Humor has sired 59 stakes winners. His 19 stakes winners of 2007 also include Hystericalady (gr. I), Cowtown Cat (gr. II), Fourty Niners Son (gr. IIT), and Funny Cide. The last-named, bred by WinStar, closed out his career with a win in the Wadsworth Memorial Handicap at Finger Lakes in July. In 2003, Funny Cide was voted a divisional championship after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Distorted Humor’s 2007 fee was $225,000.—D.S
