Brave Tin Soldier rallied from last to post a nose victory over Pleasant Strike in the Oct. 3 Cliff Hanger Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Meadowlands.
Patiently handled by Carlos Marquez Jr., Brave Tin Soldier was content to lie off the early lead set by the favorite, Get Serious. Brave Tin Soldier rallied wide around the far turn, launching a powerful drive in deep stretch to overtake Pleasant Strike at the wire.
Kiss the Kid, last yearÕs winner, got up for third, another 21Ú4 lengths farther back. The final time for the 11Ú16 miles was 1:42.52 over a turf course listed as Òyielding.Ó
The victory in the Cliff Hanger was the first North American stakes win for Brave Tin Soldier. The son of Storm Cat is conditioned by Kiaran McLaughlin, who also owns the 5-year-old.
Brave Tin Soldier began his career in Europe, where he was a member of the powerful Ballydoyle contingent. A precocious 2-year-old, Brave Tin Soldier finished in the money in three of four starts his juvenile season. His best showing was a 21Ú2-length win in the listed Laing OÕRourke Blenheim Stakes at the Curragh. He closed out his juvenile campaign with a fifth-place finish in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (Eng-I).
Purchased privately by Mike de Kock, Brave Tin Soldier joined the champion trainerÕs string in Dubai for the 2008 Carnival meeting. Not having much luck during the 2008 race meet, de Kock decided to keep Brave Tin Soldier in Dubai in order for the colt to acclimatize.
Brave Tin Soldier rewarded de KockÕs faith with a win and a strong second-place finish to start off the 2009 Dubai Carnival. He wrapped up the Carnival meeting with a decent fifth-place finish behind Two Step Salsa in the Godolphin Mile Sponsored by Etisalat (UAE-II).
Brave Tin Soldier now races in McLaughlinÕs name, after his transfer to McLaughlinÕs barn earlier this year. The Cliff Hanger was his second stakes start in North America after a sixth-place finish in the Red Bank Stakes (gr. IIIT).
Brave Tin Soldier is out of the Mr. Prospector mare, Bless, an unraced full sister to Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus. Bless was sold in foal to Storm Cat for $4 million at the 2002 Keeneland November mixed sale, where she was purchased by ClassicStar. Bless has a yearling filly by Storm Cat in addition to a weanling colt by A.P. Indy. She was bred to GiantÕs Causeway for 2010.
Storm Cat has sired 172 stakes winners, including additional 2009 grade I winners Life Is Sweet and Mr. Sidney. Pensioned in 2008, Storm Cat resides at the Young familyÕs Overbrook Farm near Lexington.ÑM.J.S.
