Won at 5ALYSHEBA S.
(gr. III , 8.5f , defeating Cool Coal Man, Star Guitar, Informed, Mambo in Seattle, Macho Again, Dr. Pleasure, Prom Shoes, Shift in Power ).
Bullsbay scored the first graded victory of his career when he wore down Cool Coal Man in the stretch to take the Alysheba Stakes (gr. III) by three quarters of a length at Churchill Downs May 1. The race was named for 1988 Horse of the Year and champion older male Alysheba, who captured the BreedersÕ Cup Classic (gr. I) that year at Churchill. In 1987, when he was the champion 3-year-old male, Alysheba scored in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) at Churchill and the Preakness Stakes (gr. I).
Ridden by Jeremy Rose, Bullsbay benefited from a rail-skimming trip while covering the AlyshebaÕs 11Ú16 miles in 1:44.29 over a track rated as Òfast.Ó Favored Macho Again finished sixth after getting outrun early and racing wide.
ÒJeremy gave him a great ride,Ó said Alice Clapham, an assistant to BullsbayÕs trainer, Graham Motion. ÒHe saved all the ground on the inside and got him to settle. This horse is a fighter, and he loves it here at Churchill.Ó
Rose said his winning strategy was inspired by Calvin Borel, who had captured an allowance race on WarriorÕs Reward and the Louisville Distaff Stakes (gr. II) on Miss Isella earlier in the afternoon. The following day Borel guided Mine That Bird along the rail and scored an upset victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands.
ÒThe trip was perfect,Ó said Rose of BullsbayÕs performance. ÒI went right to the rail. I watched Calvin, and he had won two on the rail today. I said, ÔIÕll try that. It looks like the rail is good.Õ I had a nice, big, strong horse, and I figured if I could get his head in there, as big as he is, that even if they tried to make it tight, he would push them out of the way. I love having a horse that is game like him.Ó
Mitchell Ranch, Frank Lewkowitz, and Joe Rice own 5-year-old Bullsbay. Trainer J. Eric Kruljac, as agent, purchased the bay horse for $130,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale from Paramount Sales, agent, and conditioned him for the first seven races of his career. Motion saddled Bullsbay for the first time last Oct. 12, and the horse finished third in a 11Ú8-mile allowance race at Keeneland. Motion has trained Bullsbay ever since.
Bullsbay won twice at 11Ú16 miles last fall at Churchill. He came into the Alysheba off a three-quarter-length victory over Senior in the Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Handicap at Laurel Park March 28.
Tiznow is the sire of Bullsbay and 18 other added-money winners. His other stakes winners this year are Tizaqueena (gr. IIT), who scored in the May 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IIT); Well Armed, who captured the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (UAE-I); and Tizfiz (gr. IIT). Syndicated Tiznow, who was Horse of the Year in 2000, stands at Bill Casner and Kenny TrouttÕs WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky., as part of the Taylor Made/WinStar Venture. His live-foal stud fee is $75,000.ÑD.B.B.
