Well Armed notched his first grade I win when he came from off the pace to take the Goodwood Stakes during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park Sept. 27. Sent off the favorite, he defeated last yearÕs Goodwood winner, Tiago, by a length.

This year, Well Armed has won two added-money events in addition to the Goodwood. He scored by a head over Heatseeker in the Feb. 9 San Antonio Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita and defeated Surf Cat by 11Ú4 lengths in the July 19 San Diego Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar. In his last outing prior to the Goodwood, Well Armed finished second, beaten only a neck by Go Between, in the Aug. 24 Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar.

In March, Well Armed was third in the Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-I), which was won by 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin. On the same day as the Goodwood, Curlin scored in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park and became North AmericaÕs richest ever racehorse.

Well Armed races as a homebred for Bill Casner and Kenny TrouttÕs WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky. WinStar purchased Well ArmedÕs dam, Well Dressed, for $150,000 at the 2001 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from Eaton Sales, agent. She was in foal to Awesome Again at the time.

Hail Proudly (by Francis S.), the fourth dam of Well Armed, failed to win her only race, but she was a half-sister to Combthrift (by Arctic Prince), who scored in the 1962 Seattle WorldÕs Fair Handicap. Hail Proudly produced Triocala (by Tri Jet), who captured the 1981 Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct and three other added-money events, and Tri Argo (also by Tri Jet), who won a division of the 1986 Wistful Handicap at Pimlico.

Tri Argo, the third dam of the Goodwood winner, produced Tee Kay (by Gold Meridian), who captured the 1994 Martha Washington Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Laurel and the 1995 Lady Baltimore Stakes at Pimlico.

Well ArmedÕs Goodwood victory earned him an automatic berth in the Oct. 25 BreedersÕ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita because the Goodwood is part of the BreedersÕ Cup Challenge series, which has a ÒWin and YouÕre InÓ provision. Well ArmedÕs sire, Tiznow, won the Classic in 2000 and 2001 and was the Horse of the Year in 2000 and champion older male in 2001.

Tiznow has sired 16 added-money winners. In addition to Well Armed, the stallionÕs graded stakes winners of 2008 are Colonel John (gr. I), DaÕ Tara (Belmont Stakes, gr. I), Tough TizÕs Sis (gr. I), Tizdejavu (gr. IIT), and Bear Now (gr. III). Colonel John, a WinStar homebred, might join Well Armed in the BreedersÕ Cup Classic. Tiznow, whose stud career is a WinStar/Taylor Made Farm venture, stands at WinStar. The stallionÕs 2008 fee was $30,000.ÐD.B.B.
