First Defence picked up his first grade I victory when he won the Aug. 30 Forego Stakes at Saratoga. The 4-year-old son of UnbridledÕs Song captured the seven-furlong race by 63Ú4 lengths while posting a 109 Beyer Speed Figure.

First Defence, who races as a homebred for Khalid AbdullahÕs Juddmonte Farms, is one of three homebred stakes winners from JuddmonteÕs homebred grade I winner Honest Lady. The other two added-money winners are Phantom Rose and Honest Quality.

Phantom Rose was a stakes winner in France and a Hollywood Park track record-setter. Honest Quality, a 2-year-old this year, is a stakes winner in England.

Bobby Frankel, who trains First Defence, plans to run the Unbridled grandson in the Oct. 25 BreedersÕ Cup Sprint (gr. I).

First Defence finished second in the July 26 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. II) at Saratoga in a prep for the Forego. Before that, he captured the June 15 Jaipur Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park in his first race on grass.

Honest Lady was a successful sprinter for Juddmonte. She won the Santa Monica (gr. I), A Gleam (gr. II), and Distaff BreedersÕ Cup (gr. II) Handicaps, plus the Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II). In the 2000 BreedersÕ Cup Sprint against males, she ran second to subsequent champion Kona Gold.

The Forego is named after Martha GerryÕs three-time Horse of the Year (1974-76). Winner of numerous graded stakes at Aqueduct and Belmont, Forego raced only twice at Saratoga and failed to win. He ran third in an allowance race at 3 and was unplaced in 1977 Whitney Handicap (gr. II) at 7.

Honest Lady, who is a half-sister to four graded stakes winners, is kept at Juddmonte near Lexington. She produced a GiantÕs Causeway colt this year and is in foal to Street Cry. Her yearling is a Smart Strike colt.

UnbridledÕs Song has sired 70 stakes winners, including a dozen 2008 added-money winners. UnbridledÕs Song stands at the Taylor familyÕs Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. His 2008 fee was $150,000.ÑD.S
